More than 45 million (one in six) suffer from chronic headaches, 20 million of whom are women. shows that acupuncture can be more effective than medication in reducing the severity and frequency of chronic headaches.

Chronic headache is including, but not limited and tension headache. They are often induced by , cold and over exertion etc. most of American patients take medication, pain killers such as Tylenol, Advil and Ibuprofen. The headache can be relived temporally at beginning. When they use the medication for a long time, the pain can not be relied and the side effects have appeared gradually. The problems of stomach, Liver and kidney will be involved.

Anthony, one of my patient, he had has chronic headache for 20 years. The headache comes and goes. It has been worse form two months. All the day he feels headache, severe, dizziness, nausea, restlessness, “I want broke my head sometime” he said. He took a lot of different kind of pain killers. The headache still cannot be reduced. He said that “My stomach is very hurt so much by the pain killer”. He does not want take the medication any more. So he came to my clinic to try acupuncture.

I use my special acupuncture , Acupuncture. His headaches, migraines and related symptoms were relieved after the first treatment. He stopped using all the pain killers and continues Motion Acupuncture treatments for three times once a day. He did not feel any headache without medication in that time.Headaches and migraines, as well as their underlying causes have been treated successfully with acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be used alone in the management and treatment of headaches, or as part of a comprehensive treatment program.

Motion Acupuncture is different from traditional acupuncture. Motion Acupuncture means patient do exercise with acupuncture needles according to doctor’s instructions during treatment. This is a new acupuncture technique. I am the founder of Motion Acupuncture. It is good for any kind of painful diseases. It is special for pain management.

Headaches and migraines, as well as their underlying causes have been treated successfully with acupuncture and Oriental medicine for thousands of years. Acupuncture and can be used alone in the management and treatment of headaches, or as part of a comprehensive treatment program.

Some headaches, migraines and related are relieved after the first , while more severe or chronic ailments often require multiple treatments.

Acupuncture for Seasonal Pollen Allergy in 2014

Dr. Decheng Chen. L.Ac. Ph.D.

In past allergy seasons, typical pollen characteristic included: running nose, sneezing, tears, irritated eyes and so on. Allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis show all these symptoms.

This year's pollen symptoms have some similar characteristics like in previous years, such as running nose, tears, sneezing. However not many patients showed symptoms this year, but instead more of a cough, sore throat, headache, and flu-like symptoms. Most patients have expressed symptoms such as skin rashes, itching, etc. which are a combination of partially pollen allergies and flu symptoms. Fever is the main difference to reorganize pollen allergy and flu. In general, pollen is not accompanied by heat.

The characteristics for this year’s pollen allergy can be summarized in three words: "acute, serious and complicate”, meaning it happens fast, more serious than before, and symptoms are more severe. Usually your whole body is infected, which may also indicate a combined pollen and influenza virus.

Past treatment for pollen usually dispel the wind and clear the heat, by using Jingying Hua (honeysuckle), LianQiao (Forsythia) and Jiuhua (chrysanthemum).
This year the allergy treatment should focus more on discernment of the cold and relief of the interior, we can use herbs like Chuanxiong (Szechuan Lovage Root), Fangfeng (Ledebouriella root, siler), and Baiqi (Angelica), etc. Acupuncture and herb treatment methods need to be adjusted and changed from past methods.

By Dr. Decheng Chen, L.Ac. Ph.D.

Most women enter menopause between the ages 45–55, and many experience uncomfortable symptoms such as excessive sweating, heart palpitations, numb skin, scabies, dizziness, headaches, and inability to sleep. They can also feel easily angered or anxious, become disinterested in sexual activity, and usually have abnormal periods before their periods stop altogether.

These symptoms arise due to decreased o***y function that leads to decreased levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in the body.

After menopause begins, Western doctors commonly address these symptoms with hormone replacement therapies of either estrogen alone or a combination of estrogen and progesterone, but the side effects of these therapies have worried many females.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer found that “combined estrogen-progestogen menopausal therapy are carcinogenic to humans.” Progestogens are a synthetic form of the naturally occurring progesterone.

A study by the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), found that women taking estrogen and progestins (drugs that act like progesterone), were more likely to develop breast cancer compared to women who did not take hormones.

One out of nine women who did hormone therapy with only estrogen showed precancerous changes in the lining of their uterus, although these changes were not found in women who took both estrogen and progestins.

Chinese Medicine Perspective on Menopause

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) calls female energy yin and male energy yang; blood belongs to yin and qi (our vital energy) belongs to yang. Thus women are blood-based, meaning that blood is very important for females.

For females, as yin energy and blood decrease with age, the effects are seen in the liver, which is where blood is stored, and the kidneys, which store essence or the energy that governs important physical functions including, growth, brain development, and reproduction.

Blood and essence are seen as coming from the same source and can be changed into one another. Both blood and essence are yin, and a deficiency in yin is characterized by menopause—a lack of blood and reproductive capability.

A yin deficiency will generate heat in the body, while a yang deficiency will produce cold in the body. This is the why menopause symptoms often involve heat such as: hot flashes, night sweats, and anger.

To treat menopause, TCM focuses on liver and kidney function and finds that when the liver and kidneys are stronger, the female sexual organs secrete more estrogen, which relieves the hot flashes, night sweats, and other symptoms associated with menopause.

Acupuncture and herbs are often used together to strengthen the liver and kidneys. Acupuncture treatments involve inserting needles into specific points on the body to activate the female sexual organs including the ovaries and uterus, which help balance hormones naturally. Chinese herbal medicine provides supporting nutrients for the organs.

When done in tandem, the treatment methods boost the functioning of all related organs, not only easing the symptoms of menopause, but also making women healthier. Chinese medicine treatments for menopause can also have the great side effects of making the woman look younger and extending life.

Recently a 50-year-old woman came into my office seeking help for her menopause symptoms. She had been experiencing abnormal periods for about two years and during this time had been easily angered and felt constantly angry. Not long before coming to see me, she had also started having trouble sleeping and found that taking sleeping pills did not help and made her tired, which was affecting her life and work.

I gave her an herbal remedy to take in the morning and at night, and after a week of therapy she was then able to sleep better. She was surprised that taking the medicine at night helped her sleep well, while taking the same medicine in the morning provided her with energy during the day. After about two months of treatments all of her symptoms disappeared.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can also help treat women who develop menopause like symptoms such as irregular menstruation, black spots on face, and acne after stopping birth control pills.

Dr. Decheng Chen, L.Ac. Ph.D, graduated from the Nanjing University of TCM in China and was a professor at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing.
