A stye, also known as a chalazion, is a blocked oil gland in the eyelid that leads to inflammation and a red bump or nodule. It can last anywhere from several days to several months. It is not contagious, but it can cause an infection. If you think your child has one, the best treatment is frequent warm compresses with massage to help the gland to drain.

You should see a doctor if the eyelid continues to swell, if the chalazion causes the eyelid to droop, or if it is not resolving with warm compresses. If it fails to improve, it may be treated with medications or a small procedure to drain it.

The cornea is the clear layer in the front of the eye. A scratch to the cornea, or abrasion, and can be caused by many different things - a finger, debris stuck under an eyelid or other foreign objects.

If your child has pain (especially with blinking), excess tearing or sensitivity to light, or significant redness, they may have a corneal abrasion. You can flush your child’s eye with water to gently remove any possible material in the eye. Our doctors can provide a thorough check and advise on the proper treatment, such as drops or ointment.
