April was an exciting month for us. It was a tremendous honor to carry forward the legacy of Melvin Jahss, the founding Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at NYU and a true pioneer who helped define and shape modern foot and ankle surgery as we know it today. His contributions as a clinician, educator, and visionary continue to resonate across our specialty, not only through the countless surgeons he trained, but through the enduring standards of excellence he established. To stand in a role once held by such an influential figure is both humbling and deeply meaningful, and it serves as a constant reminder of the responsibility we have to advance the field he helped build.
We were privileged to host this year’s Melvin Jahss Lecture at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, welcoming Macalus V. Hogan as our distinguished guest speaker. Dr. Hogan delivered an exceptional and forward-looking lecture on the continued evolution and innovation within sports foot and ankle surgery. His perspective, grounded in both academic leadership and clinical excellence, was not only insightful, but also truly inspiring for our residents, fellows, and faculty alike.
On a personal level, it was especially rewarding to reconnect with Dr. Hogan, a former fellow, and to see firsthand the extraordinary impact he has made as a leader in orthopaedic surgery. Watching the next generation grow, lead, and push boundaries is one of the most fulfilling aspects of academic medicine, and moments like these underscore the importance of mentorship and lifelong professional relationships.
The Melvin Jahss Lecture continues to serve as a powerful tribute to a remarkable legacy, one that challenges all of us to strive for excellence in patient care, research, and education, while inspiring the future leaders of our field.
