Acne scarring, especially in darker skin types is a real challenge to treat. Our usual go to modalities like aggressive ablative resurfacing are off the table due to concerns with potential post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It doesn't mean that it cannot be done but usually we have to really dial down these treatments. This before and after of my amazing patient is during a 6 year time period. In that time we did fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, microneedling with PRP and Bellafill, a semi-permanent filler. It's not perfect, but it has been life changing for her. She has also been diligent and motivated to improve her skin overall by using medical grade skin care and she comes in every few months for maintenance neurotoxin treatment.

It was in September of 2011 that I first opened the office on the Rockaway Peninsula. More than a decade, one superstorm, and a lot of blood, sweat and tears later, I can honestly say it's been a beautiful journey.

My father, who passed recently in April, was the sole reason i opened in Rockaway. He used to tell me as a dermatology resident in Miami that if I decided to come back to New York I needed to open a practice in Rockaway. My parents moved to Belle Harbor after my father completed residency in Pennsylvania and lived there until moving to Long Island the year before I was born. He opened his first office in the Rockaways shortly thereafter and maintained privileges with the two hospitals on the Peninsula. The day before he passed he went to Belle Harbor Manor to see patients. Suffice it to say, Rockaway was like his home away from home. He spent almost every day (yes he worked every day until he developed health issues in 2021) on the Peninsula for more than 45 years.

Every day I come to this office, I think of you, dad. It is my legacy to be practicing dermatology on the Rockaway Peninsula and I'm grateful to all my wonderful patients here as it is truly a privilege to take care of you.

It's that time of year again. Every year physicians brace themselves for draconian Medicare cuts to reimbursement. As inflation and cost of living continues to skyrocket, this is even more unsustainable than ever before. Your private practice doctors' offices will be forced to close their doors. It affects you, the patient, even if you are not a Medicare recipient because Medicare generally sets the bar for reimbursement with private insurances following suit. I'm sure you have seen a trend with physicians dropping insurances. This will only continue at an even steeper rate if we don't push back and make our voices heard. Contact your local representatives and let them know you oppose these impending Medicare cuts!

First there was Black Friday, then Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. November 29th wss Giving Tuesday. Even though the day is over, it's not too late. I donated to the DDX3X Foundation because it is near and dear to my heart. Foundations like this don't get much charitable donations because they support rare diseases that most people don't know about. Giving Tuesday gives an opportunity to raise awareness for organizations that otherwise may never be on your radar. What charity or organization did you give or plan to give to?

Before and after PRP for hairloss. The first photo is when he first came to us for PRP in 2018 and subsequently did 4 monthly treatments. Due to covid, he did not come in for his maintenance sessions and returned for treatment only one month ago. The second photo was taken this week just prior to his second maintenance session. Even though he did not come back till 4 years after completing his first round of PRP, his results held and his new baseline is improved.

I like to think that my goal with my patients is to make them feel as comfortable and happy in their own skin as possible. That's easier said than done. We all have our hang ups, our insecurities and it can be hard to always like what you see in the mirror. Often, it's more about how you feel about yourself that affects how you perceive the way you look. With my patients, I try not to minimize those cosmetic concerns that are seemingly small because invariably, they all tell a story. Fortunately, it's the way that story ends that can be changed.

Happy Halloween! 🎃. Hope everyone had a great one! This the 6th face painting in 3 weeks! We have been using Micellar Water to remove it. My kids don't usually double cleanse, however combing micellar water with gentle cleanser makes removal smooth without any ensuing skin irritation. The key is not to scrub since that can disrupt the skin barrier. A light moisturizer following the cleansing to damp skin and then just pat dry. Till next year....or the next face painting!

What a great way to send off summer ! Yep, although temperatures are still high, summer is officially over. Fall is not terrible though- with cool, crisp air, changing leaves, apple and pumpkin spiced goodies, Halloween and Thanksgiving. But it also means changing aspects of your skin care. Just to name few basic modifications-

✅️ Increased need for hydration
✅️ Decreasing aggressive exfoliation
✅️ Turning on that at home humidifier

Now is also the time to start talking to your dermatologist and make a treatment plan so that you make the most out of the best laser months so that you're ready for next summer!

What changes do you make to your skin care routine from summer to fall?

13 years ago today I became a small business owner and took over one of the practices that I had trained in for my Mohs fellowship. Since then NY Medical Skin Solutions opened two more locations, moved office space four times, and expanded services to provide total and comprehensive dermatologic care. At the same time I expanded my family, having 3 kids in five years. I would be lying if I said that it didn't feel like a ride on a roller-coaster with the ups and downs. Some years have been better than others, no doubt. My dad always said tomorrow is another day- always keep it moving and look forward. It's not always easy but I try to live by these words.
