Lord Eric Avebury was renown for his dedication to human rights advocacy, and was also one of the first UK parliamentary members to condemn the Chinese regime for its persecution of Falun Gong.

On October 21, 1999, he declared in front of Her Majesty's Government that "there is no excuse whatsoever for the actions that the Chinese have taken against the millions" of Falun Gong practitioners.

During that same parliamentary session, Lord Avebury also affirmed, "Falun Gong is an entirely peaceful belief system which encourages the highest standards of moral behavior."
