The BA.2.86 variant has been detected in New York’s wastewater and has now been identified in a few patients in New York State. At this time, BA.2.86 does not appear to be rapidly increasing or driving increases in infections or hospitalizations in the U.S., including NYS. Tests have shown the updated COVID-19 vaccine to be effective against new variants, reducing the chance of serious illness.
