Gareth Lema, MD, PhD

Gareth Lema, MD, PhD I am a retina physician and surgeon, certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. I have the following goals for this page:

1.

The views expressed on this page are entirely my own and do not reflect those of my employers. I developed this page to better reach out to my patients in an informal setting. to share information about advances in retinal research - including interesting studies or my own publications.

2. to provide a forum for patients to ask me general questions - keep in mind this is a public page and so anything you write can be read by anyone. Also, this site should not be used to communicate with me in emergency situations.

3. to provide general advice about eye health and safety.

4. to provide information about my practice at Mount Sinai, New York Eye and Ear, and the Bronx VA. Please feel free to post comments or ask questions. At times I may not respond right away, but I am eager to hear from you and grow this page into an open forum.

This is awesome. I'm so happy THE PITT chose to highlight eye strokes (CRAO to us ophtho geeks). For a time-sensitive diagnosis like CRAO, it is exposure like this that makes the biggest difference! If you have sudden vision loss without pain, it might be an eye stroke or other serious condition!

(I hope the show creators don't mind me posting these pics...everyone see The Pitt on HBO. This issue was characterized very accurately, even if the center you go to has a slightly different diagnostic algorithm.)

This is an under-recognized cause of vision loss. Bungee cords used for moving (the ones with the hooks) have caused some of the worst eye injuries I have ever seen. And many times, surgery cannot fix them.

Exercise band and bungee cord-related eye injuries are far from freak accidents. We’re glad to hear Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. is recovering from surgery following his mishap with a recoiling exercise band. You should know that it’s not always obvious when you’ve sustained a serious eye injury after a bungee cord or exercise band snaps back in your face. Read more here: https://ow.ly/qnY550XSFaM

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate.
1 John 4:11-12 NIV - Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Gave blood for the 4th time this year. This is going to be a really nerdy thing to brag about, but i was proud to fulfill the All Season Donor criteria while donating Double Red Cells. Its a tough thing to do when the donations have to be spaced out by 4 months. Give blood this holiday season! It's a free way to give someone the gift of life.

Direct quote from my son: "We have to wear goggles because scientists wear goggles." That's how you make an ophthalmologist dad proud! Safety first! 😊
