"After working in professional sports for over a decade in Major League Baseball with the New York Mets, and in the National Football League with the New York Giants, I found that that one of the biggest roadblocks to change was athletes having difficulty developing a positive and connected relationship with their coach...I found MI skills helped me not only to communicate better with athletes, but also with coaches, training them to improve their own skills in communication."

⁣Working with many leaders across all disciplines, discussions surrounding emotional intelligence come up frequently. Many understand it, but how do we put it into action? What do emotionally intelligent leaders have in common?⠀

1⃣ Understand Empathy - Connect on a personal level. Show them you understand and care about them as an individual. ⠀

2⃣ Motivation - Being curious about the other person’s motivations, seeking to understand them, and motivating based off of the reasons THEY want to do it. ⠀

⁣Challenges - We have them everyday. We can’t always change them, but we can prepare for them. ⠀

We want to create a routine that allows us to be proactive rather than reactive in order to become more mentally flexible. ⠀

What level are you contingency planning at right now?

My big “why” for writing Coaching Athletes To Be Their Best is to change the way coaches relate to players and thus change sports in general. But I also it for my girls so they can one day read the book. I hope they will recognize the values of kindness, empathy and true listening in the book as part of their experience with me.
