Still reflecting on our recent event: A Conversation on Love, where we explored the science behind why we love, who we love, and how love helps us navigate complex social dynamics.

Thank you to Dr. Lawrence Ian Reed for his deep insights (and humor!), and to everyone who joined us; your thoughtful questions and openness made the evening special. 💙

Depression has a way of filtering how we see ourselves and the world, making it hard to notice even the small wins in our journey. When dealing with depression, it can be easy to discount progress, especially the subtle, everyday steps that truly matter. Here are a few ways to approach progress with compassion:

Adjust Expectations and Celebrate Small Wins – Just like when you’re physically unwell, set gentle expectations for yourself and give credit for each step, no matter how small. Every bit of progress counts.

Look for “Glimmers” – These are little moments of joy or appreciation, like a laugh with a friend or noticing something beautiful. These glimpses of light remind us that good moments are possible, even on tough days.

Use Therapy as a Space to Experiment and Reflect – Therapy can help you try out different ways to handle difficult times and build awareness of patterns, so you can better recognize when to give yourself a break or when you might need to push yourself.

Prepare for Cycles – Depression is cyclical, and it often tricks us into resisting exactly what we need most. Make a self-care plan when you’re feeling more balanced, identifying what genuinely helps, and consider getting an accountability partner to help you stick to it during the harder days.

Progress isn’t always easy to see, but it’s there in every step you take toward healing. Remember, it’s okay to be gentle with yourself along the way. 🌱

We know mental health screenings can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re worried about being judged or misunderstood. But screenings are here to help you, not label you. You deserve to feel better, and the first step is sharing what’s really going on.

Journaling can offer a variety of benefits, particularly for those adjusting to a new academic year. Dedicating even a brief period each day to journaling can help you recognize stressors and recurring patterns and discover ways to manage those stressors.

“If worrying has costs, it surely has benefits. It can help you solve problems and motivate you to act. But, when worry starts to feel like you’re running in circles; expending energy and still not getting anywhere, it can start to take a toll on your mental health. While worry is a natural response to uncertainty, be careful not to fall into the trap of dwelling on the uncontrollable.” - Nora Newhouse

We are deeply grateful to the Annabelle Foundation () for their generous grant in support of our community-based mental health program. Their grant will support the provision of sixteen free counseling sessions to students, parents, and teachers across New York City who otherwise would not be able to access mental health services. Mental health is a fundamental part of the human experience. We are grateful for the Annabelle Foundation’s partnership in making mental health services affordable and accessible.

By acknowledging that our understanding of mental health is continually evolving, we create space for growth, empathy, and acceptance. Let’s continue to learn, support one another, and break the stigma surrounding mental health together.

1. Educate Yourself: Understand that mental health conditions are real medical issues, not personal weaknesses. More so, even those without mental health conditions can struggle with life stressors and need mental health support.
2. Talk Openly and Honestly: Break the silence by initiating conversations about mental health in your community, workplace, and social circles. Recognize that our understanding of mental health is continually expanding. What we know today may evolve with future discoveries. By openly discussing experiences and new knowledge, we contribute to a culture of learning and acceptance.
3. Show Empathy and Support: Be compassionate towards those struggling with mental health challenges, acknowledging that our understanding of these conditions is still evolving. Offer support, encouragement, and understanding without assuming to know everything. Recognize that each person’s experience with mental health is unique and may require different forms of support.
4. Challenge Stereotypes and Discrimination: Speak up against stereotypes, discrimination, and derogatory language related to mental health, while acknowledging the complexity of these conditions. New research and discoveries are made regularly, leading to a deeper understanding of various conditions. Advocate for policies and practices that reflect our growing understanding and promote inclusivity.
5. Promote Self-Care and Well-Being: Encourage self-care practices and prioritize mental health maintenance, acknowledging that our understanding of mental health continues to deepen. Normalize seeking help from mental health professionals and accessing evidence-based treatments. Emphasize the importance of staying open to new information and adapting our approaches to mental health as our understanding evolves.
