ATS Section on Genetics and Genomics

ATS Section on Genetics and Genomics We welcome all those interested in genetics, genomics, and other “omics” technologies as they pertain to pulmonary and sleep medicine.

Genetics and genomics play an ever-expanding role in scientific research and medical practice in the 21st century. Besides providing a forum for the exchange of ideas among researchers in genetics and genomics, the Genetics and Genomics section of the American Thoracic Society aims to increase knowledge and understanding of genetics and genomics among the broader pulmonary, critical care, and sleep communities. We also aim to encourage fellows and trainees to pursue research in these exciting fields. Our section’s major emphases are on highlighting genetics and genomics research at the ATS International Conference and teaching genetics and genomics concepts through symposia, seminars, and post-graduate courses at the ATS International Conference.

An Aberrant Immune–Epithelial Progenitor Niche Drives Viral Lung Sequelae

Harish Narasimhan, PhD, will present the recently published Nature article investigating long-term consequences of COVID-19 by establishing a mouse model of post-viral lung disease. Using this mouse model, they identified an aberrant immune–epithelial progenitor niche unique to fibroproliferation in respiratory post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). They found lung-resident CD8+ T cell–macrophage interactions as critical interactions for impairing alveolar regeneration and driving fibrotic sequelae after acute viral pneumonia. They also discuss important avenues of therapies for patients with long-term post-viral disease. Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion from experts in the field.

"Improved Annotation of Asthma Gene Variants with Cell Type Deconvolution of Nasal and Lung Expression-Quantitative Trait Loci"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39836087/

Our findings demonstrate increased power for identifying eQTLs among asthma-associated SNPs by considering cell-type proportion of the bulk-RNA-seq data from nasal and lung tissues. Integration of cell-type deconvolution and eQTL analysis enhances our understanding of asthma genetics and cellular mechanisms, uncovering potential therapeutic targets for personalized interventions.

Asthma is a genetically complex inflammatory airway disease associated with over 200 Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). However, the functional effects of many asthma-associated SNPs in lung and airway epithelial samples are unknown. Here, we aimed to conduct expression quantitative trait loci....
