Concussions are a frustrating injury. They are also incredibly common, with almost 4 million concussions occurring every year in recreational activities and sports alone. Over half of these concussions go unreported and without proper treatment can risk a more severe injury. Concussions also occur very frequently outside of the sports world, most often as a result of falls or motor vehicle accidents. If you or someone you love has sustained a concussion or traumatic brain injury our skilled team of physical therapists can give you the proper guidance you need to recover from your concussion.

A concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head that causes the brain to smash against the skull, disrupting normal brain function.

How are Concussions Diagnosed? As an “invisible injury,” it can be hard at times to determine if you have a concussion. A concussion is typically diagnosed upon examination by a doctor, including both physical and cognitive tests.

Physical therapy can be tremendously useful for dealing with concussions and mitigating their symptoms.

If you or someone you know has sustained a concussion and is seeking physical therapy Park North PT would be glad to help. If you are an athlete looking to get back on the field as soon as possible or someone trying to get back to living your full life, contact us today by phone 212-222-6525 or email info@parknorthpt.com

Enhancing Balance with Physical Therapy

Having proper balance is very important because it can help improve postural alignment and develop coordinated movement. Balance training is essential to have in your exercise regimen.

What is Balance training?

Balance training involves participating in exercises that strengthen your muscles to help you keep upright. It's important to incorporate any activity that improves your stability and helps prevent any falls. Doing balance exercises every day can improve your balance by working on those muscles to keep you stable.

Factors that can affect your balance:
* Inner Ear problems - Your inner ear senses your body movements and sends information to your brain.
* Muscles and Joint problems - if your muscles are too weak to function correctly, they cannot keep you upright and prevent you from falling. Having weak muscles can cause problems in the way that you operate.
* Heart Problems - Blood flow is the key to everything. Anything that interferes with your regular blood flow through the body can certainly cause dizziness and balance problems.

How can Physical Therapy Help?
* Reducing Fall Risk
* Improving mobility
* Improving Movement
* Flexibility and Posture

Balance is crucial to functioning in your everyday life. Park North PT is here to help you restore balance. Schedule an appointment today by giving us a call at 212-222-6525 or sending us an email to info@parknorthpt.com

Through following the NeuFit Method and using the Neubie device, we have been able to help hundreds of people relieve their back pain much faster than traditional therapies!

We are able to rewire your nervous system to re-educate and reset dysfunctional movement strategies that you may have developed. Additionally, we are able to improve mobility, increase range of motion and strengthen the muscles in that area!

A sprained ankle is painful! Uneven pavements, shoes that don’t fit, missing a step - these things and more can lead to a sprained ankle.
🩼
Sprained ankles happen when our ligaments are forced out of their normal range of motion. Ouch.

∙Hearing or feeling a popping sensation at the time of injury
∙Pain, swelling, and bruising
∙Inability to bear weight on the injured foot
🩼
If you are suffering from a sprained ankle talk to your doctor about physical therapy. Our team at Park North Physical Therapy will provide you with the tools you need to help your sprained ankle. Send us an email info@parknorthpt.com or give us a call 212-222-6525 today to schedule an appointment.

Treating Your Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The muscles and other tissues of our body can take on a lot physically. When done carefully, we can push our bodies to reach new physical limits. BUT, that doesn't mean our bodies are indestructible. There are times when we overuse specific tissues, which can lead to issues such as Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS or IT Band Syndrome).

What Is IT Band Syndrome?
ITBS is a type of overuse injury. The IT Band is a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs from the outside of the hip, through the inside of the thigh and knee, to the shin bone. When our IT Band becomes overused and irritated, it can lead to problems in and around the knee.

What Can Lead To IT Band Syndrome?
Due to the nature of the IT band, various activities can lead to ITBS. Knowing what these are can help better prepare for avoiding this issue. Although many stimulants can lead to overuse injuries in general, the most common activities that can cause ITBS include:
•Running
•Hiking
•Cycling
•Walking long distances

How Our Team Can Help
At Park North PT, our primary objective is to get patients back to full strength. Below are just some of the ways our team will help with treatment:
•Teach stretches and strengthening exercises that promote healing within the IT band and surrounding tissues
•Helping you understand the proper mechanics of the activities you perform
•Provide tips on how to perform warm-ups and cool-downs

If you'd like more information on ITBS, schedule an appointment with one of our physical therapists by giving us a call today at 212-222-6525 or sending an email to info@parknorthpt.com

Swipe through to see Matt, one of our Physical Therapists, displaying proper form for deadlifts. You can practice deadlifts with a light weight or no weight at all to focus on getting your form right.

Maintain a long spine. Feet about hips width apart. Bend your knees. Sit your hips back. Press evenly through the soles of your feet. Lift. Your form is equally as important when releasing the weight back to the ground as it is when you lift.

Deadlifts can help strengthen the muscles in your back, glutes, and hamstrings when performed correctly. Want more tips on how performing popular exercise moves correctly can help your body? Schedule an appointment with us today by sending an email to info@parknorthpt.com or giving us a call at 212-222-6525.
