Dr. Haydée C. Brown

Dr. Haydée C. Brown Mother. Surgeon. Dancer. Social Justice Advocate. Alum: Dr. Brown differs from the ‘typical’ orthopaedic surgeon. Love.

She is one of the few Afro-Latina orthopaedic surgeons practicing in the US. Her family hails from Colón, Panama. The native Harlemite performed with the in Mr. Ailey's "Memoria." Dr. Brown intimately values returning from an injury properly and efficiently. She centers each treatment plan on patient education. This approach has allowed her patients to dance on sta

ges throughout the world. The COVID-19 pandemic personally and professionally recommitted Dr. Brown to the motto “Live. Serve.” The pandemic magnified the disproportionate impact of long-standing health disparities on underserved communities. In late March 2020, Dr. Brown served as a NY Medical Reserve Corps volunteer in a South Bronx Emergency Room during the peak of sick patients. One of Dr. Brown's core values is to “pay it forward” and impact the “room[s] where it happens.” She advocates for diversity, education and inclusion in healthcare through volunteerism, speaking engagements, corporate partnerships, and mentoring. Dr. Brown lives in Harlem, and is the proud mother of an inquisitive 9 year old son. She enjoys mentoring and empowering those underrepresented in medicine, dancing, & running. In an era where Blackness is being “erased,” the Met Gala somehow leans into Dandyism and unapologetic .

As a native Harlemite… hija de Los Colones 🇵🇦… and a proud descendant of Hampton, VA, Dandyism is not just style—it’s lineage. It’s Uncle Saul. Aunt Agnes. Granny and Grandpa.

It’s the quiet dignity of holding a college degree and choosing to work with pride—as a postal worker, a porter, or a grade school teacher. It’s being a worker bee in the white world by day—and presenting yourself in all your glory by night.

It’s the miracle of every Black persona you meet. Living. Thriving. Shining.

Last night, the Jack and Jill Bronx Chapter celebrated 30 years of service, sisterhood, and impact in our beloved community!

We were proud to honor four trailblazers whose voices and vision continue to shape the world for the better:
Tamika Mallory, Sunny Hostin, Cheryl Simmons Oliver, and State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey — thank you for inspiring us all.

Our celebration supported incredible organizations doing grassroots work every day:
Grassroots Grocery, The Bronx Children’s Museum, and the Jack and Jill of America Foundation.

Deepest thanks to our phenomenal event co-chairs Kameil Grant-Knight & Cherisse Cleary, and to our brilliant Chapter President Rachel Cheeks-Givan for trusting Mother Michell Tollinchi and me with leadership of the Digital Gala Journal.

It is truly an honor to serve in this illustrious organization — dedicated to uplifting our children and building a better future for all.

She warned us. We warned y’all.

This wasn’t just another election—it was democracy vs. autocracy. And too many people voted for whiteness and maleness over justice and equality. Now look where we are.

We—the 92%—tried. We canvassed, called, traveled, donated, organized. We did everything to stop this.

But 77,302,580 people chose authoritarianism over equity, justice, health care for all, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, racial justice, and a multicultural democracy.

Now…
People are disappearing for speaking up. Citizenship won’t protect you. Degrees are being revoked. Congress is acting like it’s business as usual (Schumer, we see you), but the stakes are life or death.

Measles are back. Environmental protections are gone. The safety net is unraveling. If you don’t get it yet, look up structural adjustment and neoliberalism—or just read Project 2025. They’ve told us exactly what’s coming.

We failed you, Soror Kamala Harris. Now, the country is paying the price.

To the 92%—rest, protect your peace, and lean on the survival strategies of our enslaved ancestors. They left us blueprints for resistance and liberation.

We’ve been here before—we know how to fight and how to endure.

✊🏾 Stay awake. Stay ready.
