Harkness Center for Dance Injuries at NYU Langone Health enhances the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of dancers and dance companies through clinical services, education, and research. Since 1989 HCDI has been dedicated to providing the dance community with the highest quality injury care and preventative resources. We are thrilled to introduce our newest physical therapist, Nicole Mawhirter, PT, DPT!

Nicole is a graduate of Quinnipiac University with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and her Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy. She was also a physical therapy student intern at Harkness Center in 2022. Nicole started dancing at three years of age and has performed in many theatrical productions from childhood through college. Her passion is helping performing artists get back onstage safely and keeping their bodies conditioned to prevent future injuries. She has experience treating performing artists both in the clinic and backstage, providing triage care at many Broadway and off-Broadway shows throughout Manhattan. Now, Nicole is grateful to contribute to performing arts medicine and wellness to the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries community.

Registration is now open for the Harkness Dance Medicine Cohort of Rehabilitation Professionals (CORPs)!
CORPS is a 4-module continuing education course for licensed healthcare professionals specializing in rehabilitation that will run July-October 2026.
CORPs is eligible for up to 14 contact hours for continuing education. Each module will include asynchronous content and a monthly virtual meet up to discuss case studies.

CORPs Module 4 will focus on the foot and ankle in the dancer. Meet module 4 instructor: Dr. Sarah Edery-Altas, PT.

Dr. Edery-Altas is a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist and Clinical Specialist at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries at NYU Langone Health. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Columbia University and is currently completing her PhD in Health Sciences, where her research focuses on the biomechanics of dance jumps and decision-making for return to performance.

Sarah treats dancers and performing artists across the lifespan, from pediatric patients experiencing their first injury to seasoned professionals and lifelong dancers seeking to sustain performance. She has extensive experience working across dance and performing arts settings, including Broadway, theater, ballet, modern, and collegiate environments.

She is deeply involved in clinical education and research, contributing to the development of return-to-dance guidelines and advancing evidence-based care in performing arts medicine. As a former professional ballet dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet and Boston Ballet, Sarah brings a unique understanding of the demands placed on the foot and ankle in high-level performance. She is passionate about bridging science and artistry to help performers return with strength, precision, and confidence.

CORPS is a 4-module continuing education course for licensed healthcare professionals specializing in rehabilitation.

The Harkness Center Healthy Dancer Initiative application period is now open!

The Harkness Center Healthy Dancer Initiative (HCHDI), a partnership with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Gibney, and Broadway Dance Center, provides subsidized movement sessions and free wellness workshops to professional dancers with financial need. The program aims to encourage a sound, holistic approach to self-care and aid in career longevity.

The next six-month term takes place from June 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.

CORPs Module 3 will focus on the hip in the dancer. Meet module 3 instructor: Dr. Marla McReynolds-Waldron, PT.

Dr. McReynolds-Waldron is originally from Southern California but has lived in New York City for the past 20 years. She earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Columbia University following a successful dance career performing on Broadway, with Cirque du Soleil, National and International Broadway tours, film, and TV. Marla currently practices at Harkness Center for Dance Injuries and is passionate about helping people get back to performance.
