11/11 ✨️Good news!!✨️ Keoni did very well at his CT scan today, and we just received the wonderful results!✨️

The tumors on Keoni's neck and spine have shrunk more than half their original size, and the tumors in his liver don't appear at all in the CT scan- they've disappeared!!

Thankfully, Keoni has responded very well to chemotherapy. After the initial phase of fatigue and decreased appetite after chemo, he is now more like himself~ energetic, smiling, and full of life.🤗 His appetite is increasing, and he is starting to gain a little weight, too. 😊

MSK Neuroblastoma Oncologist, Dr. Kushner, will let us know if he thinks Keoni needs chemotherapy for the remaining tumors on his neck and spine, or if he suggests monitoring and rechecking the tumors with a repeat CT next month. We are praying for there not to be a need for further treatment.

On Sunday Sept 29th, our lives forever changed. We woke up to shrill cries coming from the room of our 5-month-old baby boy. When I picked Keoni up, I noticed he was hot to touch, his right eye was drooping, and his pupils were unequal. A golf ball-sized lump on the right side of his neck was inhibiting his ability to straighten his neck.

We went to the ER and were then told we needed to be transferred to a Children's Medical Center for a higher level of care. After an ambulance ride, blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, and days of anxiously waiting for a diagnosis, the doctor entered our room and introduced himself as the Oncologist. He told us what every parent fears hearing - "the results show your baby most likely has cancer - neuroblastoma."

Keoni's MRI shows he has a large tumor on the right side of his neck, right side of his spine, and multiple masses in his enlarged liver.

We feel like we're living in a bad dream that we wish we could wake up from. A few weeks ago, Keoni was playing and laughing with his grandparents visiting from CA and TX.

Days now are filled with doctor appointments, blood tests, biopsies, medicine, conversations making plans, updating family, and waiting for results and next steps.

Our next step for now is waiting for his MIBG body scan results to reveal if he has other tumors throughout his body. We are praying the rest of his scan is clear.

Keoni will then undergo a surgical procedure to insert a mediport in one of his major veins close to his heart for 6 to 12 weeks of chemotherapy.

During this time, we have taken a personal leave of absence from work and are spending quality time caring for Keoni.

Keoni's sweet smile and playful energy when he feels well give us strength for the moments he doesn't feel well, as we share hours consoling and holding him in our arms.

We are so blessed to have loving family in CA & TX and friends in NYC and beyond reaching out, checking in, and showing support. We are eternally grateful.

We appreciate all the offers of prayer, help, and support during this difficult time as we navigate this diagnosis and treatment.🙏💞

What an inspirational experience spending the day at Harlem Grown at our Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital leaders' day of service. We had the honor of meeting and hearing the life-changing story of , founder of non-profit organization Harlem Grown.
After volunteering at a public school in Harlem and witnessing the health, economic, and academic challenges in the community, Tony rallied volunteers to transform an abandoned lot across the street into a welcoming urban farm.
Over the years Harlem Grown has converted 14 vacant lots in Harlem into thriving urban farms with outside libraries filled with books for neighborhood children. Tony invites people to experience the farm while learning about sustainable, healthy planting, composting, cooking, and eating.
Hillery's work helps address a severe ongoing crisis in New York City, where more than 119,000 children are homeless and approximately 1 in 5 is food insecure.
Thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables are grown every year, which is all given to the children and families of the surrounding neighborhoods.
His work in the community has impacted more than just the youth, Tony has helped transform the lives through the power of growing food, providing meaningful jobs with benefits, and building healthy relationships with people.

In the words of Tony, “We plant fruits and vegetables, but we grow healthy children and sustainable communities."

Inspired by individuals like Tony Hillery who are being the change they want to see in the world.

Grateful to be part of the care system that celebrates and supports milestones along life's journey. As a couple wanting to expand our family, Northwell Health and it's amazing specialists and care providers helped make it possible for my husband and I. As a patient I received exceptional care before, during, and after my pregnancy. As an employee, my Northwell team checked on me like their own loved one, and supported the time I shared bonding with my new little one. After a transformative experience of becoming a mother, I am excited to be back with my Northwell family, caring for our wonderful team members and patients. Northwell is more than a healthcare system; it's a way of caring.
