Kids with nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD) have a number of different learning challenges. All of them have to do with recognizing patterns, but the specifics vary a lot from kid to kid. Areas that kids with NVLD might struggle with include visual patterns, social patterns, abstract reasoning, math, and organization. The first step to helping kids with NVLD is figuring out exactly what kinds of patterns they have trouble with.

A specialized assessment for NVLD can pinpoint what kinds of learning a child struggles with. Then, kids can get support tailored to their specific needs. This involves teaching them to find the kinds of patterns that they might miss on their own. For instance, they can learn to pick out the main ideas when learning complicated things and practice breaking problems into smaller steps. The same strategies can even help kids with NVLD who have trouble understanding social interactions. Once they learn a pattern they can use it as a script to approach new situations.

In my practice, I see kids of all ages with NVLD during auditory processing evaluations. In these evaluations, I assess how well a child processes auditory information, such as speech and other sounds. These evaluations are conducted in sound-treated rooms. The tests can also measure auditory memory, discrimination, and localization. The evaluations can last up to two hours.
