Nerve Block Therapy

This minimally invasive procedure targets specific nerves to block pain signals.
💉 Under ultrasound or X-ray guidance, a precise injection with anesthetic (and sometimes anti-inflammatory medication) is made near the affected nerve.

What it does:
* Provides fast, targeted pain relief
* Helps identify the exact pain source
* Reduces inflammation and allows tissues to heal
* Can break the pain cycle for long-term improvement

Safe, quick, and performed in-office by pain management specialists.

What is Occipital Neuralgia?

Occipital neuralgia is a condition characterized by chronic pain in the upper neck, back of the head, and behind the eyes. It occurs when the occipital nerves, which run from the top of the spinal cord to the scalp, are inflamed or injured. Symptoms include sharp, jabbing pain, aching or burning pain, and sensitivity to light. Diagnosis is often based on clinical evaluation and sometimes imaging tests. Treatment may include medication, physical therapy, nerve blocks, or other interventions to manage pain. Early intervention can help reduce the severity of symptoms and improve the quality of life. If you suspect you have occipital neuralgia, consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

Why do we sometimes recommend a nerve block? 💉

Not all pain can be managed with tablets or physical therapy.
A nerve block is an injection of anesthetic (sometimes combined with a steroid) placed near a nerve to reduce or completely stop pain signals.

➡ Provides quick and targeted pain relief
➡ Helps us diagnose the exact source of pain
➡ Reduces the need for strong medications
➡ Allows patients to move, recover, and start physical therapy easier

For many people, this procedure becomes a real turning point in their pain management journey — helping them return to daily life without constant discomfort.

If your pain is persistent and not responding to standard treatments, ask us whether a nerve block could be the right option for you.

Cervical Radiculopathy: More Than Just Neck Pain

Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve in the neck is pinched or irritated. This can cause:
➤ Sharp or radiating pain from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand
➤ Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations
➤ Muscle weakness and reduced mobility
➤ In some cases, even headaches

🔴 Common causes include herniated discs, arthritis, or spinal degeneration.

If the pain persists or begins interfering with your daily activities — do not ignore it. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent symptoms from getting worse.

At Dr. Vadim Kushnerik’s clinic, we provide an individualized approach: from medication and targeted injections to minimally invasive procedures designed for long-lasting relief.

Treatment for a Pinched Nerve

✅ Rest and Immobilization
Rest the affected area and avoid activities that worsen symptoms.
✅ Physical Therapy
✅ Medications
• NSAIDs: Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can relieve pain.
• Anti-seizure Medications: Gabapentin (Neurontin) may help with nerve pain.
• Tricyclic Antidepressants: Nortriptyline (Pamelor) and amitriptyline can be used.
• Corticosteroids: Oral or injected steroids can reduce pain and inflammation.

✅ Surgery
If symptoms persist after several weeks of conservative treatment, surgery might be necessary. Procedures vary by location and may involve removing bone spurs or parts of a herniated disk, or cutting the carpal ligament for carpal tunnel syndrome.

A Typical Kyphoplasty Follows These Steps:

➝ Patient lies face down, back is cleaned and anesthetized.
➝ A small incision is made, and a narrow tube is inserted into the fractured vertebra using X-ray guidance.
➝ A balloon is inflated inside the vertebra to create a cavity and restore height.
➝ The balloon is removed, and the cavity is filled with a cement-like material (PMMA) to stabilize the bone.
➝ After observation, the patient is typically allowed to go home if no complications arise, but should arrange for transportation.

What to Expect After Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET)

Recovery after IDET takes time, and improvements usually appear gradually. It is normal if pain relief does not come right away — the healing process can take several months, with noticeable changes often around 4–6 months.

▫️ First 2 weeks — discomfort may temporarily increase as the disc starts to heal.
▫️ Up to 6 weeks — wearing a back brace and limiting daily activity is recommended.
▫️ First 4 months — avoid heavy lifting or intense physical work.
▫️ By 6 months — you can slowly return to all activities, including sports.

Following your doctor’s recommendations will make recovery smoother and safer.

Back pain is a common issue, but small daily habits can help prevent it. Maintain good posture whether sitting or standing by keeping your spine in a neutral position. Use supportive furniture to reduce strain.

Incorporate regular physical activity, focusing on exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles, such as yoga or swimming. Proper lifting techniques are also essential—always bend your knees and keep objects close to your body.

By following these simple steps, you can protect your back and prevent pain from affecting your daily life. Seek professional advice if discomfort persists.
