As a frontline healthcare worker, I was allowed to be vaccinated this week, and just this afternoon I received the Moderna vaccine! So far I am feeling completely fine! I am smiling behind my mask with enormous relief, for although I have been using many layers of protection and precaution while treating patients, I have become increasingly concerned about these new more transmissible strains. And Doctors and scientists are saying that vaccinating as many people as possible, as soon as possible, is the best way to slow down these mutations. So I encourage you all to stay on top of the news (ie. NYS is opening up the vaccine eligibility to those in category 1B this week, possibly tomorrow), and don’t hesitate for a second! Let’s all do everything we possibly can to shut this nasty bug down ASAP, and get back to a world where we can gather with, and hug our friends and family with abandonment!!🥰🤗

First, wishing all of my friends and clients a very happy, healthy, and safe New Year! Let's hope that 2021 is a better year for us all! Today I am posting a recent video of me working with a new patient in my office to correct her standing posture. Proper posture is key to treating and/or preventing all kinds of musculoskeletal injuries, most commonly neck and lower back pain. The key to proper posture is the correct alignment of all of our body segments over our base of support. When this is successfully achieved the weight and stresses that are constantly on our body are translated down through our spine, pelvis, hips, knees, and feet into the ground. If we are not properly aligned, then whenever we are sitting, standing, or walking, there is constant stress, strain, and wear and tear on our spine and other joints that over time will lead to deterioration and damage. Many people stand with their knees locked, their pelvis anteriorly tilted, their sternum thrust forward, their rib cage tilted posteriorly, and their head and neck thrust forward. Most of us get into these bad postures as a matter of habit. This will feel "normal" to us, and we are completely unaware of the daily damage that we are doing to our bodies! In this video you can hear and watch me correct these issues and demonstrate to the patient that once she is in proper alignment her entire body is much more stable and supported! I would love for you to come see me so that I can correct your posture. I promise that you will feel an immediate and profound difference, and start to see the of benefit that these simple postural corrections can have on decreasing your pain and maintaining a healthy body for many years to come!

I highly recommend using a local screen printing company. There are a quite a few nuances in bringing your vision to life and working with a company that you can easily talk to on the phone makes it a much easier process!

This Tuesday was the 4th anniversary of my mother Lucille’s passing, which as you can imagine, has brought up many memories of “Lulu” and my youth.

I would like to share one early memory that I just realized says a lot about my journey to become a physical therapist and the powerful healing power of touch. When I was about 3 years old, my parents would head into Manhattan almost every Saturday evening for a weekly “date night”. I was a very sensitive boy and very attached to my parents. On this particular Saturday night, I remember standing by the front screen door to the house, watching my parents leave, and being extremely scared and anxious that they would never be coming home. This frightened me to the core and I could not stop shaking. I have no idea how I figured this out, but somehow I knew that the one and only thing that could calm me down was if someone would rub and tickle my back. So I went to the babysitter and told her this, and I remember lying down on my parent’s bed while the babysitter rubbed my back. The effect was almost instantaneous. Immediately, my body started to relax, calming me down!

I believe that this very early experience stuck with me throughout my life and is one of the reasons that I became a very successful “hands-on healer”!

Here is a photo of my parents, Elliot and Lulu on one of their date nights!

Very exciting news! There appears to be a strong relationship between exercise and our body’s ability to prevent the development of cancerous cells, and to attack and destroy any cancer already in our bodies. Although these findings have only been shown in mice, there is compelling evidence that exercise changes the immune system, specifically the “CD8+ T-cells” in ways that make them more potent and able to attack and kill off many types of cancer cells. And if it applies to humans, it is yet another great reason to get off the couch and get moving!! For many years I have been telling my patients that “it’s not a question of IF the sh*ts going to hit the fan, but rather just a question of when”!! In other words, at some point we all will face serious health challenges, and I can guarantee you that the better shape you are in going into a health crisis, the better chances you will have of prevailing over that crisis!!

This is my favorite story of the power of exercise in overcoming illness. My father Elliot Lippin was 65 years old when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. He was told that he had 2-3 years to live. Elliot was a terrific athlete and a highly disciplined person. He worked out almost every day, whether it was strengthening his arms and legs with weights at home, or running and biking. Elliot was being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, so he received world class cancer care, but through all of his treatments and hospitalizations, Elliot never stopped working out. A few days before Elliot passed away, he was doing his strengthening exercises at home. Elliot ended up defying all the doctors’ predictions. He lived for 15 years after his diagnosis, most of those years with the strength and determination to continue the activities he loved; skiing, tennis and hiking. I know that it was Elliot’s healthy lifestyle and discipline that helped him gain many extra years of productive and enjoyable life, but I now suspect that his exercise regimen played a big role in his body’s ability to supercharge his immune system and keep the cancer at bay for all of those years!

Just another wonderful reminder about the importance of, and direct connection between, what we eat and our health and how we feel!! Before I put anything in my mouth, I do a quick cost/benefit analysis of the nutritional value of the food I am about to eat! Is it healthy fuel or not?? This doesn’t mean I don’t “cheat” and eat deserts or treats, but they better be damn good and “worth it”, and/or, I will try to relish and be satisfied with a smallish taste/portion! We are only given one body, and it is our sacred duty to try to keep it running as smoothly as possible, for as long as possible!! This is my overall approach to eating, I hope that sharing my thoughts and approach helps some of you! I would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and comments about how you see food!!

This is what cutting out sugar and dairy and eating lots of fish and blueberries did to my productivity.
