My workstation essentials 💻🧴📓🖊⁣

Think of having Narcan as readily available as an EpiPen, it saves lives by reversing opioid related overdoses.
⁣⁣
Fentanyl is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any other cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and all other accidents. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Overdose deaths linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl tripled among teenagers in the last two years. CDC data shows that a record 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2021, a 15% increase from the previous record set. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Knowledge = Power 🧠💪 ⁣⁣

⁣Where do you keep your Narcan?⁣⁣

An about me for a summer Friday! Here’s a little more about the work I do and the passion that drives it. ✨💛⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Treating individuals struggling with substance use AS WELL AS their family/friends/loved ones is a big part of my work, as it has touched my life and the lives of so many. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Having worked in multiple outpatient treatment centers in NYC I have worked extensively with the identified substance user, and saw a huge gap in family involvement in treatment. A gap that I believe can be filled. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is why I am so grateful to have been trained in CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) by the man who created it, Dr. Robert Meyers, and have the ability to use it regularly in my private practice as well as with the groundbreaking online platform .co in our weekly meetups!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
CRAFT is proven to help:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
✨get loved ones into treatment⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
✨reduce substance use ⁣⁣⁣
✨improve our health and wellbeing ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
So, if you’re reading this, and know what it’s like to navigate the complex world of addiction, my hope is you feel EMPOWERED to know you can HELP FACILITATE POSITIVE CHANGE! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
If you have any questions about CRAFT please feel free to DM me (it’s one of my favorite topics of conversation 🤓💕)! ⁣⁣⁣

Today is my dad’s birthday AND the first-ever Mental Health Action Day. A day to shift the conversation around mental health from awareness into action. ⁣

One action I am taking is telling my dad “Happy Birthday”, and sharing his newest poems here with anyone reading this!⁣

The first poem “First Hug” was written once the CDC said vaccinated people could hug their loved ones again. 🤗⁣

The second poem “Mask Confusion” explores his feelings as the mask mandates lift. 😷⁣

In sharing his poems that are quite vulnerable I hope others are inspired to look within and connect with how they’re doing.⁣

Action looks different for everyone so for for Mental Health Action Day I encourage you to do something that feels right for you! Some ideas for actions you can take are: exercise, reach out to a friend, go for a walk, check in with yourself, find a therapist.⁣

What action will you take today for your mental health? 💪🏻🧠⁣
Share with me below!👇🏻⁣

one day at a time. ✨💛⁣

🌟If you’re supporting someone struggling with substance use, take it one day at a time. ⁣
🌟If you’re trying to get to the other side of this pandemic, take it one day at a time.⁣
🌟If you’re participating in Dry January, take it one day at a time.⁣
🌟If you’re exploring your relationship with substances, take it one day at a time.⁣
🌟If you’re working on yourself in any way, take it one day at a time.⁣

(Also reach out to a therapist, connect with others, maintain community, tell your loved ones how much they mean to you, and take care of yourself.)⁣

What are you taking one day at a time? 🤗⁣

During this pandemic my dad became a poet and I didn’t even know it! (That he had a poetic side, that is). ✨💛

I look up to him as he is a clinical psychologist who has run his own practice the Institute for Behavior Therapy for 50 years (founded in 1971). Don’t get me wrong, we argue and disagree a lot, but our professions have brought us closer than I ever thought they would.

We’ve spent a lot of time during COVID discussing the challenges we face as therapists supporting others while adapting ourselves, helping each other look at cases in new ways, and imparting our own wisdom on each other.

Last week he wrote two poems: one was “Reflections on a Pandemic New Years Eve”, and another was a poem for me, “Erica’s Poem” that he wrote out of the blue.

I wanted to share them in the following slides because his poem to me brought me to tears 😭 and shows how clinicians can always support each other, even if there are 40+ years in age differences. And the Pandemic NYE piece highlights that it’s never too late to tap into a new hobby (again, he never wrote poetry before March 2020).

I’m so grateful to all the people in my life who have been there for me and have had a strong desire to let them know! ✨💛⁣

Check on your strong friends.⁣
Check on your quiet friends.⁣
Check on your “happy” friends.⁣
Check on your old and new friends.⁣
Check on each other.⁣

As a collective 𝐰𝐞’𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫. My friends, family, community, colleagues, and coffee baristas have provided incredible support for me: “I value and love you all!”⁣

So, on this Tuesday night, December 29th, 2020, I’m encouraging anyone reading this to reach out to someone just to let them know you care.⁣

You can send them this post, mention them below, call, text, FaceTime, Zoom, or send a carrier pigeon! Whatever works for you! 🤗⁣

NEWSFLASH! Going to therapy is cool! ✨💛⁣

It’s also extremely important to keep an eye on our mental health, now more than ever. ⁣

A New York Times article “The Hidden ‘Fourth Wave’ of the Pandemic” highlighted the impact of the pandemic on Americans mental health:⁣

“In June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 40 percent of American adults reported at least one adverse mental or behavioral health condition, including experiencing symptoms of mental illness or substance abuse related to the pandemic.”⁣

Therapy has evolved so much recently and there’s a huge movement to de-stigmatize the way we look at mental health and getting help. People are talking about mental health more than ever but we still have a long way to go in reducing the stigma. If you’re in therapy, AMAZING keep exploring yourself! If you aren’t but are curious, do some research (I’ll put some resources in the comments below). ⁣
