What’s the job of a PT?

Physical therapists are movement specialists. We help people recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve strength, mobility, and performance. In the performing arts, our role goes beyond treatment—we’re part of the team that helps productions run smoothly.

When we partner with a production, we’re not just there to tape ankles or jump in when someone’s hurt (though we do that too). Our job is to help mitigate the risk for injury. That means having conversations with the cast, crew, and creative team; sharing information; and offering resources to support performer fitness and resilience.

We can help catch issues early—before they become bigger problems. That means fewer performance disruptions, which reduces stress and saves time, money, and energy for everyone involved.

And when injuries do happen, we manage the process and make sure performers have the support they need to heal.

Yes, having a PT takes financial resources—but even with limited support, we can do a lot by working smart and collaborating across departments.

We’re not just a nice-to-have—we’re a critical part of keeping performers healthy and shows on track.

Building Sustainable Wellness Programs Starts with Understanding the Culture

The more I collaborate with performing arts institutions and envision bringing health and wellness programming into diverse spaces, the more I’ve come to realize: creating an impactful program—whether it’s for physical therapy, injury prevention, or general wellness—starts with understanding the unique needs and culture of the organization.

It’s not just about injuries. It’s about space constraints, staffing models, budgets, time, and a host of other variables that influence how a program can be implemented and sustained.

I’ve also learned that meaningful integration doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes the right approach is to start small—with just one or two services—and build trust and momentum over time. Especially within large institutions, change requires patience. It requires listening, strategizing, communicating vision, and deeply learning the rhythms of the community you’re serving.

When that foundation is laid with care, the program can grow—mindfully and in alignment with the people it’s meant to serve.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. And neither are wellness cultures.

Every year, as the school year wraps, we meet with current and incoming Steps Conservatory students—some in person, some virtually—to talk summer strategy. Not about choreography or technique, but about how to use the long break.

We emphasize rest and recovery and guide students in safely progressing activity so they’re ready for the demands of fall. Too much rest? That can be just as risky as doing too much.

We help them build a training plan, share resources to support capacity building, and highlight the role of PT—encouraging pre-term screenings and full injury rehab before classes resume.

It’s all part of building health literacy and helping our dancers take ownership of their resilience.

Excited for workshop 1 of 2 tonight and to meet all of the newbies!!

When a performer is placed on medical leave, it’s not just time off—it’s time on for recovery. From day one, I let performers know that healing becomes their full-time job, and my role is to guide them through it with clarity, structure, and support.

We start by calming the storm—reducing pain, controlling inflammation, and protecting the injured area. Once things begin to settle, we move into the rebuilding phase: gradually increasing load to restore strength, control, and resilience in the tissue.

But we don’t stop there.

Getting back on stage isn’t just about healing one body part. It takes full-body stamina, coordination, and control—physically and mentally. That’s why rehab must go beyond the injury.

We work on building local tissue capacity and a training schedule that includes strength, conditioning, power, and the right level of rigor 😉. You’ll get targeted homework and supportive resources so that when you walk back through the stage door, we don’t wonder if you’ll succeed—we know you will.

We train for the stage, not just the clinic. My goal is to help you return not only pain-free, but stronger, sharper, and more confident than before.
