Sitting All Day?

If you spend most of your day at a computer, you’re not alone. More people than ever are working in desk-based professions, and with that shift comes a rise in chronic tension, stiffness, and posture-related pain.

According to recent industry coverage, deep tissue massage, remains one of the most in-demand massage services, especially among office workers dealing with neck pain, tight shoulders, upper-back strain, and headaches. For many, it has become the go-to solution for restoring mobility, improving posture, and reducing the physical stress of a sedentary lifestyle.

At Lenox Hill, deep tissue massage is more than a feel-good service. It is a strategic, therapeutic treatment offered as part of our integrated care model.

Why Deep Tissue Massage Is Rising in Popularity

In 2026, deep tissue massage continues to stand out as one of the most requested bodywork techniques nationwide. With desk jobs becoming the norm across nearly every industry, people are dealing with:

Tight neck and shoulder muscles from forward-head posture

Mid-back strain from hours of slouching
Low-back tension from sitting without proper lumbar support
Stress-related muscle guarding
Reduced mobility and flexibility
Deep tissue massage addresses these issues by focusing on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. Unlike a traditional relaxation massage, deep tissue work targets chronic tension patterns and soft-tissue restrictions that contribute to pain and poor posture.

Massage For Neck And Shoulder Pain

Neck and shoulder pain often stems from poor posture and daily strain. Massage therapy provides immediate relief while addressing posture misalignment, offering lasting improvements. Let’s dive into how it delivers relief that goes beyond the surface.

Modern Lifestyle and Poor Posture

Blame our modern lifestyle. The CDC reports that the average adult spends over 7 hours daily on sedentary activities—working at a desk, watching TV, or scrolling on a smartphone. Poor posture, repetitive movements, and stress all contribute to turning minor discomfort into chronic pain. Untreated neck and shoulder pain can disrupt sleep, lower mood, and impact long-term mobility.

Massage therapy is a powerful solution. It loosens tight muscles, eases stress-related tension, and mobilizes stiff joints. Beyond immediate relief, regular massages improve posture, restore flexibility, and prevent recurring pain, helping you feel your best every day.

For those seeking a gentle touch, Swedish massage is the ultimate stress-buster. Using flowing strokes and light pressure, it soothes muscles, improves circulation, and alleviates mild discomfort often caused by stress or poor posture. By reducing tension and stiffness, this technique leaves you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the day.

Trigger Point Therapy: Relieving Pain at Its Source

When localized pain or “knots” take over, trigger point therapy steps in with precision. By focusing on releasing specific tight areas in the muscles, this technique provides targeted relief from sharp or radiating pain often caused by overuse or stress. It’s ideal for anyone dealing with recurring tension or localized discomfort.

How Massage Impacts the Brain

Massage has a direct impact on the nervous system. When you receive a massage, your brain releases chemicals that help you feel good and reduce stress.

Boosts Serotonin and Dopamine Levels

Massage therapy increases serotonin and dopamine. These are the “feel-good” hormones that improve your mood. Studies show that even one session of massage can raise these levels, helping reduce anxiety and depressions Cortisol, the Stress Hormone.

Stress can lead to high cortisol levels. This hormone causes issues like weight gain, sleep problems, and low energy. Massage therapy lowers cortisol levels, making you feel calmer almost immediately.

“How often should I get a massage?” is a question we are asked often here at Lenox Hill Massage & Physical Therapy. The short answer would be as often as you like really. The long answer depends on many factors to include the type of massage you are having, your pain and physical needs and indeed your stress and emotional needs.
,
A massage every week or every two weeks would be ideal but not realistic for every person. We also have to remember that regular massages are important to help prevent injury, pain and tension build up in the muscle fibers, and for de-stressing/relaxing the mind and body.

Ideally, we want to be investing in positive health rather than just investing in fighting illness. Ideally, a weekly massage is just the ticket to keep everything flowing nicely and to optimize overall health and well-being.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy for Heart Health

It’s called therapy for a reason. Studies have shown that massage can increase blood flow, oxygen, nutrients, and red blood cells; as well reduces your heart rate and lowers blood pressure. A therapeutic massage also helps increase endorphins which gives a healthy boost to your cardiovascular system. In addition to helping lower your risk of developing certain heart diseases, massages can improve circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system. This helps to flush out toxins and other waste materials from your system, allowing the cardiovascular system to work more efficiently. Massage not only relaxes muscles but can also help improve the function of the entire cardiovascular system, as well as boosting overall heart health and well-being.

Depending on the type of massage, a therapist may work on your muscles, joints, nerves, and/or layers of connective tissue deep below your skin. A few examples of massage techniques include deep tissue massage, trigger-point therapy, and neuromuscular therapy.

A massage can cause the following changes to occur in your body, easing the sciatica pain:

Loosen and relax muscles. When your trunk, core, and lower back muscles are tight, they can apply pressure on the sciatic nerve root(s) in your lower back. Tight muscles may also get knotted up into small painful nodules, causing trigger point pain. Massage therapy can effectively stretch, loosen, and elongate these muscles, improving pain and function in your lower back and legs.

Facilitate the circulation of healing nutrients. Hands-on soft tissue manipulation from massage stimulates the blood vessels in your skin and deeper tissues. There is enhanced circulation of blood, oxygen, and other nutrients to the sore areas, promoting healing.

Massage stimulates specific pressure receptors in your brain, which are special nerve fibers. Stimulation of these pressure receptors helps reduce pain by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormone.

Reduce stress. Stimulation of the pressure receptors also helps reduce the levels of cortisol in your body the hormone that causes stress. Reduced stress helps provide a feeling of relaxation and relief, with a lesser perception of pain. Call and schedule an appointment today with one of our many professionals. Which Massage is Best for Back Pain?

For those suffering from back pain, a deep tissue massage is one of the best types of massage. This massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, releasing chronic tension and relieving pain. Deep tissue massage can also help improve posture and reduce inflammation. While a deep tissue massage may be uncomfortable initially, it is highly effective in relieving pain and promoting healing. Other massages that may benefit those with back pain include Swedish, trigger point, and Shiatsu.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you and what you feel most comfortable with. Some people may need weekly massages to manage their back pain, while others may be fine with having one every couple of months. You should discuss your needs and goals with your massage therapist so that they can help you determine the best plan for you.

What is a Pinched Nerve?

For those who are just learning about this somewhat mysterious condition, a pinched nerve is exactly what it sounds like – a nerve that has been compressed or “pinched” in some way. This can cause pain, tingling, numbness, and other uncomfortable sensations in the area that is affected by the nerve. A common example of a pinched nerve is sciatica, in which the sciatic nerve, located in the lower back, becomes compressed, causing pain to radiate down the leg.

How Massage Therapy Helps With Pinched Nerves
There are a few massage therapy techniques that use gentle but firm pressure to target and release tension in the muscles surrounding a compressed nerve. This can help alleviate pain and discomfort, improve circulation, and promote healing in the affected area.

Additionally, massage therapy can help improve posture, reducing pressure on nerves that may be affected by misalignments or imbalances in the body. By addressing these underlying issues, massage therapy may help prevent future pinched nerve occurrences.

Tendonitis can be caused by a broad array of factors, from gardening to sports, arthritis to aging, or even by anatomical factors (realignment of the tendon by surgery). Tendonitis symptoms can include tenderness, pain, inflammation, swelling or lumpiness on tendon sheaths, and adhesive capsulitis or “frozen shoulder”.

Conventional and Massage Therapies for Tendonitis
Treatments for tendonitis are rest, icing, discontinuation of heavy activities, and application of anti-inflammatory medicines, with surgery as the last alternative. Massage therapy for tendonitis is also becoming extremely common as a cure. It can be applied by working on the injured fibers, back and forth–not up and down.

Massage should not be given until 48 hours after the injury, or if the tissues are swollen or noticeably inflamed. A self massage therapy for tendonitis is friction massage therapy. It is used in injuries caused on the shoulder, elbow, back of the heel or thumb-side of the wrist. In this therapy, strokes (back and forth) are applied perpendicular to the injury using gentle pressures with fingers and thumb. Studies have shown that friction massage stimulates the production of collagen in damaged tendon fibres, thereby healing the injured part rapidly. Trigger points in the forearm can be massaged to reduce an injury of tendonitis on the wrist.

How does massage help increase flexibility?

Massage helps increase flexibility in many ways. Massage increases flexibility by increasing temperature tissue elasticity, breaking down adhesions, removing waste products, reducing swelling, and decreasing pain. Including flexibility training as part of a regular fitness routine is essential. Improved flexibility can enhance performance and improve muscular condition.

Massage helps increase flexibility by increasing temperature. Massage stimulates an increase in temperature by applying friction across the skin. Friction causes capillarization and vasodilation in the blood flow, which allows more blood to be delivered to the muscles. Increased blood circulation in the muscles allows the muscle fibers to loosen and be stretched.
