Did you know? Women without stable housing are nearly twice as likely to die from breast cancer—often because of delayed diagnosis and barriers to care.

That’s why we’re especially thankful to the American-Italian Cancer Foundation for bringing their Mammogram Bus to our Susan’s Place shelter. These free, on-site screenings help make sure that lifesaving care isn’t out of reach for the women who need it most.

We’re also grateful to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for joining us to share vital information on tuberculosis testing with our community.

Together, we’re breaking down barriers to care and building healthier futures for our neighbors.

In 2024, when homelessness in NYC reached its highest level in more than a decade, Care for the Homeless responded with bold action—delivering 41,244 health care visits, serving 12,411 patients, and providing 9,201 mental health visits. We also opened two new shelters, expanded residential capacity to 750 beds, and helped nearly 200 people move into permanent housing.

Behind every number is a story of resilience and hope. Learn more and read the full report at: https://careforthehomeless.org/who-we-are/financials-and-reports/2024-impact-report/

A recent resident at our Women’s Shelter in the Bronx, Jeannette has reached a powerful milestone—moving into permanent housing and continuing her journey of sobriety.

She shared that while her health is still a work in progress, the support she received from the on-site health center at Susan’s Place made all the difference. Her message to others: help is out there—don’t be afraid to lean on the people who care.

Today, we’re celebrating Sylvia Smith and her remarkable journey of leadership, service, and community.

Sylvia’s story doesn’t end with securing housing — it expands into entrepreneurship, public service, and staying deeply connected to the women she met at Susan’s Place. Whether it's her work at the Department of Education or the businesses she runs, Sylvia leads with heart and purpose.

We’re proud to honor Sylvia as a Summer Solstice Success!

“Health Care for the Homeless: How Do We Protect the Vital Care We Provide Amidst Federal Threats?” is now available to watch online.

Homelessness remains one of the most urgent and complex public health crises in the U.S. Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) programs are on the frontlines — providing trauma-informed, comprehensive care and connecting people to housing, stability, and recovery.

In this powerful discussion, panelists explore how HCH programs serve as both a safety net and a driver of systemic change, and what we must do to protect and expand these services.
