Ankle Sprain/Strain🦶🏼

Did you know 👩🏻‍⚕️ chiropractors are able to treat areas outside of the spine? Here's a case we had earlier today where a patient sprained their ankle playing 🏀basketball.

Immediately after treatment, the majority of their swelling went down and we were actually able to see the lateral malleolus🤓

So what's the difference? 🤔

Let's start with some definitions.

🔅Ligaments are the bands of tissue that connect two bones together in a joint.

🔅Tendons are the dense fibrous cords of tissue that connect bones to muscles.

Overstretching or tearing ligaments are known as a sprain. Symptoms include bruising or pain around the affected joint, swelling, and limited range of motion. Overstretching or tearing the tendon or muscles is known as a strain. Symptoms include muscle spasms, swelling, and limited range of motion.

🥴Common sites of injuries?

The most common locations for a muscle strain are the hamstring muscle and the low back. Sprains are more common in the ankle.

✨The main difference between the two is that with a strain you will generally have muscle spasms, whereas with a sprain it's more common to have bruising around the affected joint.

If you think you may have a sprain or strain, visit your chiropractor today. There are plenty of treatment options available so we can get you feeling better faster!

✨Here are a few I’ve chosen to highlight:

🏃🏻‍♀️In one study, 100% of runners with joint problems reported reduced symptoms and were able to maintain or increase their training mileage after receiving chiropractic care.

🏈During the course of a football season, chiropractors give up to 16,320 - 27,200 adjustments to pro players.

🏀Regular chiropractic care helps basketball players boost their speed, flexibility, range of motion, balance and strength.

🏌🏽90% of golf injuries involve the neck or back. Chiropractors can help golfers correct postural imbalances in their swing to prevent injury.

⚽️Soccer players found relief from chronic groin pain after only eight weeks of chiropractic care and rehabilitation exercises.

⚾️Regular chiropractic adjustments help baseball players significantly improve their long jump distance and increase muscle strength.

🏒Chiropractic care reduces painful symptoms of recurrent shoulder instability due to hockey injuries. 80% of hockey related injuries can be managed with four or less treatments.

I snuck in an extra 😜 Did you notice?

The real answer is that ALL sports benefit from chiropractic care. There’s a reason why most major sports teams have chiropractic physicians on their staff☺️✨

Before we get into tips, we first have to understand what B O D Y • Biomechanics means. Simply put, it means the science of movement of a living body. That includes how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement.

For our bodies to function properly, we need to have good body alignment aka optimal placement of our body parts so that bones are efficiently used and so muscles have to do less work to achieve the same effect. Make sense?

So how do we do this?

1️⃣Keeping your back in a neutral position
2️⃣Using proper lifting techniques -- you’ve heard people say, lift with your legs and not with your back!
3️⃣When walking or standing, keeping your ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle in a line. Stand shoulder width apart.
4️⃣Push shoulders back and down, keep your chin level by pretending it's resting on the back end of a shelf.
5️⃣Listen to your body - you should never feel strain or discomfort. Your body will tell you when something doesn’t feel right.
6️⃣Maintain some level of fitness to keep your strength up!

When it comes to evaluating my patients, these are all factors I take into consideration. They tell me which muscles are being overused, which are weak or tight and contribute to the way I develop treatment plans✨

Did you know that for every inch forward you hold your head, the weight carried down through the spine increases by 10 pounds?

Here are some tips to avoid putting extra strain on your neck!👇🏽

1️⃣ Keep your phone at the level of your eyes so your neck isn’t in a compromising position
2️⃣ Put the device down & take frequent breaks
3️⃣ Practice good posture
4️⃣ Stretch often - especially chest opening stretches!
5️⃣ Exercise regularly - strengthen the muscles between your shoulder blades & the muscles of the anterior neck!
6️⃣ Keep hydrated! Because the discs in the spine are composed largely of water, frequent hydration is key in preventing text neck. This keeps the discs healthy and pliable.
