Call and response — a jazz essential… and also how found its way to Lincoln Center Summer for the City! 🎷🧘‍♂️

Lincoln Center called, and we joyfully responded.

The result? A unique collaboration: live jazz by a quartet led by meets guided meditation by Shinnyo Buddhist priest — an hour of sound-based contemplation, free and open to all.

Join us in the David Geffen Hall lobby on 6/28 at 11 AM. Let’s relax, restore, and rediscover connection within.

Persons in custody at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center (OBCC) on Rikers Island celebrated with their families last month as part of a Community Engagement Day.

In addition to spending quality time with their loved ones on Oct. 7, the individuals in custody were also presented with certificates in recognition of their consistent participation and progress in programs at the facility.

The programming for the day also featured a meditation session with Reverend Qalvy Grainzvolt, a Shinnyo-en Buddhist priest and chaplain who has led monthly meditation and mindfulness workshops for persons in custody at the facility for the past year.

Our Story

The Shinnyo Center for Meditation and Well-being aims to help individuals achieve the confidence and courage to nurture healthy minds, cultivate authentic identity, and help others. We find there is deep wisdom in a phrase from Muriel Rukeyser’s poem that says: “the universe is made of stories, not atoms”. In that sense, we love meeting with and listening to the stories of others whether they sit with us in guided meditation or self-guided practice on Fridays or in our community service initiatives and collaborations outside of the Center. We look forward to hearing your stories because in an interconnected world, your story is our story too.
