Safe, functional, and aesthetic outcomes on the face begin with precise anatomical knowledge.

Understanding the location of key neurovascular structures is critical for any facial procedure.
Use these landmarks as dynamic guides, not absolutes:

SON (Supraorbital Nerve): ~2.4cm (±0.4) from midline

STN (Supratrochlear Nerve): ~1.4cm (±0.3) from midline

ION (Infraorbital Nerve): ~2.7cm (±0.3) from midline, ~0.9cm (±0.2) from infraorbital rim

MN (Mental Nerve): ~3.1cm (±0.3) from midline along mandibular curvature, ~1.5cm (±0.2) from inferior border

MMN (Marginal Mandibular Nerve): intersects the mandibular border at a vertical axis from the lateral orbital rim

TN (Temporal Branch of Facial Nerve): most vulnerable at mid-zygomatic arch; lies within a zone bordered by a line from lobule → brow tail (inferior) and tragus → 2cm above brow tail (superior)

GAN (Greater Auricular Nerve): zone extends ~6.5cm inferior to the EAC, anterior to tragus, posterior to antitragus

Parotid Duct: crosses the intersection of a line from lobule → upper vermillion border and the lateral orbital axis

Whether you’re performing a complex Mohs repair, designing a local flap, or placing a cosmetic injection, detailed knowledge of facial surface anatomy is non-negotiable. Understanding the location of key neurovascular structures allows you to avoid functional complications and optimize both safety and aesthetic outcomes.

This carousel outlines 8 high-risk anatomical danger zones discussed in Dr Khorasani’s textbook, Surgical Lifting. These danger zones should inform your surgical planning and injection technique. While the measurements provided offer helpful reference points, they vary significantly by s*x, individual phenotype, and age—especially relevant in elderly patients with resorption of bony structures.
