Play Builders Theme-based activity groups for young children with special needs. Provides opportunities to practice play skills and develop social competence with peers.

Play Builders is a service offered by New York Center for the Developing Child, one of New York’s most distinguished child development institutions consisting of New York Center for Child Development and New York Center for Infants and Toddlers Inc. Play Builders focuses on increasing a young child’s play skills, social competence, and communication abilities with peers in a group setting. Each we

ek a theme is chosen and designed to capture a child’s interest while embedding practice of a variety of skills essential for successful play with peers. Our curriculum is designed to promote learning in the following areas:

Improving imaginative play, sequencing play actions, and initiating/joining play with others

Commenting, listening and responding to peers in a meaningful way during play

Sharing, turn-taking, waiting appropriately, and being flexible

Problem-solving and cooperating to work together in achieving a common goal

Recognizing the feelings, emotions, and actions of others and responding appropriately

Building friendships through playful interactions and humor

Each child will be screened and grouped according to age/skill level and social needs, not to exceed 6 participants. We invite families to participate in our groups for opportunities to observe strategies and learn ways to help promote positive playful interactions with their children. Groups will be held at Church of All Souls, 1157 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10075
