“I’ve seen a child held down by three people just to get a haircut.”

In her testimony, Natalina Elden, BCBA, shares the reality many children on the spectrum face and the trauma that can come from something as routine as a haircut.

What should be a simple experience often becomes overwhelming, forceful, and sometimes, unsafe.

This is why training matters.

Not just for barbers, but for anyone working with children.

Because with the right tools and support, we can replace fear with trust, and create experiences that are safe for both the professional and the client.

Thank you for showing up!

To every barber, stylist, educator, and community member who joined us for Autism & Sensory-Safe Haircare Event, we appreciate you.

This wasn’t just an event. It was a room full of professionals choosing to learn, grow, and create safer, more inclusive experiences behind the chair.

A special thank you to our partners at Empire Beauty School at Union, and Mindful Cuts, our guest instructor Rosamarie Del Plato, and the elected officials and industry leaders who took the time to be in the room and engage with this work.

And a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for your support in making this event possible.

"We drive an hour just to find someone who understands."
In this testimony, Terri - mom of two, shares the reality of raising children with sensory needs, and the lengths families go just to access something as basic as a haircut.

The experience can quickly go from routine to traumatic, and for Black families, the stakes are even higher.

Showing up well-kept isn't optional, it's necessary.
This is why inclusive training matters.
Not just for some, but for everyone.

"In one year, we went through six barbers, just hoping someone could understand.” In her testimony, Danna Dennis the Founder and Executive Director of Sensory Safe-Cuts shares the reality many families face, and the gap that still exists.

Barbers and stylists are doing their best.
But they need support too.

We’re calling for:
6 hours of standardized training and continuing education.
So every client can have a safe, consistent experience in the chair.

This April which is Autism Acceptance Month, alongside our youth ambassadors, we’re exploring Community & Visibility.

What it means to be seen, supported, and represented, especially for autistic and neurodivergent individuals.

This is a significant month for us because it coincides with Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month.
We’re excited to have Stephen Gruzlovic join us as our guest speaker, sharing his experiences and advocacy work in pushing for systems that truly support independence and inclusion.

Our goal for this session is to show these young leaders how to take their personal experiences and turn them into community-wide impact.

Today, parents, individuals, and advocates came together to testify at the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology meeting, and our voices were heard.

We showed up for one clear reason:
To push for more inclusive grooming spaces across New Jersey.

That means:
• Barbershops and salons that are sensory-aware and inclusive.

• Barbers & Stylists are trained to support individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

• New Jersey gets a standard for continuing education in inclusive care.

This is about making everyday spaces safer for everyone.
We’re not done. This is just the work beginning.

Big thank you to Nassan's Place, for creating spaces like this that truly center inclusion.

We’re excited to be part of it!

Sensory Safe-Cuts met with Assemblyman Dan Hutchison, and his team to discuss a critical step forward for the grooming industry.

At the center of the conversation: creating a system that integrates continuing education into licensing for barbers, hairstylists, and groomers, with a strong focus on sensory-awareness and inclusive care.

We had a great conversation with Meredith Bloom (Autism Outreach Core, Drexel University) and Nicole Pomales (Cosmetology Lecturer, Camden County College) as we explored the role of higher education in advancing sensory-inclusive care.

Our discussion focused on the opportunity to integrate sensory-awareness and inclusivity into cosmetology and grooming-related coursework, equipping future professionals with the knowledge and tools to better serve neurodivergent and autistic individuals.

This is how we build long-term, sustainable change, starting from education.

Hello folks!

As we step into a new quarter, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the impact we’ve made so far this year at Sensory-Safe Cuts, and we are just getting started.

In Q1, we:
✨ Met with assembly members and elected officials to discuss expanding our advocacy and statewide impact .

✨ Tabled at the SEPAC SOMA Resource Fair, connecting with families and community members whose lived experiences reinforced the urgent need for stronger advocacy in the grooming and hairstyling industry.

✨ Advanced conversations around launching a statewide pilot program for sensory-safe grooming spaces.

✨ Testified at the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities, emphasizing the need for proper tools and mandatory sensory-safe training for barbers and hairstylists serving neurodivergent and autistic clients.

✨ Began pushing for the adoption of sensory grooming kits across barbershops and salons.

✨ Strengthened our Youth Ambassadors Program with three impactful monthly meetings so far.

✨ Hosted a community meeting where advocates came together to learn how to better advocate for themselves and others in the area of sensory-safe grooming and hairstyling across New Jersey.

What’s coming next?

🚀 We are gathering advocates and community members to testify at the upcoming New Jersey Cosmetology Board virtual meeting focused on inclusion and accessibility in the grooming industry.

🚀 Continued stakeholder engagement to move policy conversations forward.

🚀 Expansion of our Youth Ambassadors Program and community outreach initiatives, including a special Youth Ambassadors meeting this month featuring a guest from NJLEND.

Today, on World Autism Day, we’re reminded why this work matters. Every individual deserves a safe, comfortable, and inclusive grooming experience.
