Insights from one of our Chaplain colleagues who cares for our homeless New Yorkers.

When people are on the street, shouting, or on the subway talking to themselves, or just struggling in unseen ways, most of us to look away or to think if they could get well if they tried harder. Or, if they were forced into care.

But this is the reality.

The system is difficult to navigate even at your best. For those living with serious mental illness, it can feel almost impossible. And what often gets labeled as โ€œbrokenโ€ behavior is, in many ways, people trying to survive within something that isnโ€™t built to hold them.

None of us can be reduced to what you see in a moment. Our value, our humanity, rests in simply being alive.

Elements House-LES is a resource to homeless New Yorkers with SMI who are seeking a judgment free community of peer support. Our doors and hearts are open when they, when you, are ready.

As a mental health chaplain in New York, I help people leave homelessness. But mental illness, bureaucracy and a fragile system often pull them back
