We’re glad to welcome Dr. Judy Chang to the team at Uptown Downtown Psychotherapy.

Dr. Chang is a psychologist working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families across NYC. She specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma, emotion regulation, relationship concerns, and life transitions — offering a warm, collaborative space where clients feel safe, understood, and supported.

Her integrative approach is grounded in psychodynamic therapy and incorporates evidence-based treatments including CBT, DBT, ACT, trauma-informed care, and family-systems perspectives. She also brings experience in PCIT-informed and play-based approaches when working with children and families.

Dr. Chang provides affirming care to LGBTQ+ individuals and considers how social, cultural, and relational contexts shape identity and experience. She is bilingual in English and Korean and offers therapy in both languages.

We’re honored to have her thoughtful, relational, and culturally attuned presence on our team.

In psychotherapy, change rarely comes from forcing ourselves to be different. It comes from understanding—our defenses, our longings, and the relationships that shaped us.

January can be a time to slow down and notice what’s asking for attention, rather than setting impossible expectations.

Therapy begins with curiosity, not urgency.

Psychotherapy is not about fixing what’s “wrong.”
It’s about creating space to think, feel, and understand patterns that may have shaped how you relate to yourself and others.

At Uptown Downtown Psychotherapy, our clinicians offer thoughtful, expert care for adults navigating a wide range of life experiences.

We are in-network with Aetna and offer both individual and group therapy in NYC, with virtual and in-person options available.

As 2025 comes to a close, it can be meaningful to pause and notice the progress that may not have felt obvious while it was happening.

Progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it shows up as responding differently, tolerating feelings that once felt overwhelming, setting boundaries with less explanation, or recognizing patterns sooner than before. Often, the most significant changes are internal—quiet shifts in understanding, resilience, or self-compassion.

In psychotherapy, progress isn’t measured by perfection or resolution. It’s reflected in increased awareness, flexibility, and the capacity to stay with difficult experiences rather than avoid them.
If you find yourself looking back on this year with mixed emotions, that too can be a sign of growth. Complexity often means something meaningful has taken place.

As we move forward, we acknowledge the work it took to get here—and the progress that deserves to be recognized.

Some parts of us learned to stay quiet, pleasing, or “fine” to get through.

In therapy, we make room for what’s real—needs, anger, grief, desire, softness—so you can feel more you in your relationships and in your life.

If you’re curious about starting (or returning to) therapy, we’re here.

-Welcome Dr. Casey Buonocore to Uptown Downtown Psychotherapy-

Dr. Casey Buonocore (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adults, children, adolescents, couples, and families. Her clinical expertise includes PTSD (particularly relationship and sexual trauma), OCD, mood disorders, and disordered eating.

Dr. Buonocore practices from a feminist relational perspective, integrating behavioral interventions when helpful, and brings a deeply collaborative, gender-affirming approach to her work. As an LGBTQ+ ally, she is committed to creating a therapeutic space that is inclusive, affirming, and responsive to each client’s lived experience.

Her background includes extensive work in university counseling centers, forensic psychology, and specialized training in eating disorder treatment. Social media has become a central part of daily life—but its impact on mental health is deeper than most people realize.

For many women, these platforms amplify an old message:
that worth is tied to appearance.

Constant exposure to curated, filtered images can lead to self-objectification, body dissatisfaction, anxiety, and shame. And although social media feels like a space you can “control,” the pursuit of likes and validation often creates a cycle of comparison and self-surveillance.

In a recent blog, Dr. Jessica Nadel dives into the research behind:
• Why social media uniquely fuels self-objectification
• How these pressures begin early in life
• The psychological cost of curating a “perfect” online self
• What you can do to reduce the negative impact
• How to reclaim agency over your mental health

Read the full post: “How Social Media Is Messing with Your Mind (and How to Take Back Control).”

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of comparison, body image, or social media use, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
