Today Self-Care for Black Men turns 2! What a ride it’s been!

Back in the day I grew up watching TRL, being borderline obsessed with how well new albums would do each week. Billboard used to tout this idea of a sophomore slump, meaning that new artists’ second album didn’t do as well as their first. I was nervous about this with Self-Care for Black Men, and those anxieties were completely unfounded.

Community showed up and Self-Care for Black Men is the book l’m most known for.

I’m incredibly grateful for the memories so far and I’m excited to be a part of a conversation that helps Black men honor their mental health, practice self-care, and meet themselves with more care and compassion.

Thanks for being on the ride with me.

Happy book anniversary Self-Care for Black Men!

Are you good at loving on yourself?

I often find myself surprised when I talk to people and they share their struggles with practicing self-love. Oftentimes, they think they lack the blueprint to loving on themselves. They don't know what to do!

I find an easy way to think about is to remind yourself that you already know how to love! Most of us have some experience with love - from family members, to friends, to partners and spouses...and even pets.

We all have experience giving out acts of love. We just need a little practice in making ourselves the receivers of that same love.

Try out any of these activities that you might generally do for someone else when they need some TLC and try them on yourself sometimes.

We don't have to work to be loved or love on ourselves. We deserve it simply because we are here.

Don't forget that 💛

Democracy ain’t what it used to be.

I found myself in DC for a few days to be a bit of a tourist and spend some time connecting with family. It was a good trip but understandably came with many reminders of the challenges we’re faced with right now.

It was a healthy, light break from my normal everyday AND a heavy reminder of all the challenge and vitriol in our world.

Our trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture couldn’t happen due to the shutdown. It was an important piece of the trip that would’ve allowed us to visit an important piece of history together, especially before it underwent any further changes or influence. This inconvenience is but one tiny impact of the impact of things going on right now. Ultimately, I’m incredibly privileged to have the time to visit the city at all and to feel generally safe while there.

Hope for the future is hard to come by and my beliefs about what comes next shifts by the minute. However, I will say that it was necessary to feel reconnected to a place that is supposed to represent freedom and pursuit of happiness for all of us. I take those visions very seriously and unequivocally, even if the forefathers didn’t fully.

I hope to bear witness to us walking closer and closer to those hopes and dreams. Until then, I’ll remember them and hold fast to the belief that there is more good to come.

As an aside, go get some fish and chips from the Gordon Ramsay spot at The Wharf - it was surprisingly delicious.

Today in my latest newsletter post I’m sharing some thoughts on the pressure of “knowing” and how leaning into ambiguity is a great gift for self-discovery.

Can you relate?

Can you relate?

Repair Template:

Step 1: Apologize, no excuses, no deflection, no blame shifting, just a sincere apology

Step 2: Do what you can to make things right. This includes stopping what your child said was hurtful. This can also include paying for therapy, etc.

Step 3: Sit with the discomfort. Just like any other relationship an apology may not result in a restored relationship. If you are apologizing with the only goal to have a restored relationship, you’re doing it wrong.
