Alaia, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. He is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and injuries of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow. Born and raised in Levittown, New York and graduating magna cm laude from Cornell University, Dr. Alaia received his medical degree from the New York
University School of Medicine, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and received awards for academic and clinical excellence. He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, named in the top five orthopaedic hospitals in the country in the recent U.S. He had the additional honor of being named an Executive Chief Resident during his final year of training. He then completed an additional year of fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the James A. Nicholas Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, treating active patients of all ages and studying innovative procedures dedicated to joint preservation, soft tissue repair and complex reconstruction. During this time, he also had the privilege of treating elite athletes, working with the medical staff of the New York Jets and New York Islanders. Dr. Alaia currently serves as the co-director of the NYU Sports Medicine Fellowship, the Director of Orthopedic Continuing Medical Education, and educates some of the country’s best residents and fellows at NYU. He is considered an international expert in treatment of complex knee injuries, with an emphasis on primary and revision ACL reconstruction, multi ligament knee injuries and dislocations, and cartilage and joint preservation. He has over 100 peer reviewed publications and was awarded the prestigious 2017 Arthroscopy Association of North America Traveling Fellowship and routinely lectures at national and international meetings. He is one of the team physicians for NYU Sports as well as the US Ski and Snowboard team. Dr. Alaia currently sees patients in Manhattan, Queens, and Manhasset, New York.
