I love this quote by Anna Freud that I recently came across. The psychoanalyst, Adam Philips says, “the implication is clear: magic is satisfying but reality is nourishing”. I think it’s a good reminder of the necessity of balancing fantasy and reality / possibility. Some of us may lean too heavily in one direction or the other. Fantasy, desire, and imagination help us bring to life what we want, which could surpass the ways we feel limited, especially in constructed ways, for example by family or society. We don’t want to limit ourselves with rigid thinking. On the other hand, there’s the danger of holding out for the perfectly cooked eggs of the breakfast of our dreams, while never feeling satisfied or nourished by the actual eggs in front of us (or life as it is at any given moment).

If only we could live the spirit of this wise quote by Desmond Tutu. It feels especially timely during this election season, but really always.

In Ta**ra, the vajra (an ancient weapon), symbolizes our true nature, which is of indestructible power or potential. Ta***ic practices support breaking through the ways we limit ourselves and stifle possibility, often due to confusion or mistaken beliefs about the nature of reality. The vajra also symbolizes the inseparability of the body and mind and speech or energy. Ta***ic wisdom recognizes how the body, mind, and speech / energy function together dynamically and can help or cause harm to one another. We can think about how speech and energy affect the mind and body when we consider the impact of our words. Speaking to ourselves or others with hate causes harm, while speaking to ourselves and others with care promotes wellbeing. The condition of the mind can also be improved by way of the body or our vital energy through physical exercise, breathwork, and good nutrition. Ta**ra's recognition of the relationship between body, mind, and energy speaks to the shift in modern psychotherapy to a greater focus on somatic or body-based work. Somatic therapy recognizes the importance of attending to our bodily experience as another way to build awareness, cultivate wellness, and heal from trauma. Outside of therapy, we can consider how we cultivate our own wellbeing holistically. How aware and attentive are you to the interplay between your body, mind, and speech/energy? Does yoga, exercise or other movement practice, meditation, deep breathing, or nutritious food support you to feel well physically and emotionally?

I wanted to share some of what I’ve been learning about Ta**ra at the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science (from the Tibetan Buddhist lineage and teachings of Yuthog Yonten Gonpo). I became interested in studying Ta**ra by way of my meditation practice and interest in Buddhism. Like psychotherapy, Ta***ic practices offer a path toward healing, transformation, and greater wellbeing. So what exactly is Ta**ra? One of our teachers, Dr Nida Chenagtsang defines Ta**ra as a lineage of embodied wisdom and learning. Ta**ra offers a systematic approach to transforming the pain and suffering of our lives so that we may reach our full potential and capacity for great bliss. This is accomplished through a methodology and practices for caring for the body and mind and the energy that links them, including through bodywork, breathwork, use of the imagination, and the cultivation of wisdom and insight for psychological health. Notably, the preliminary practices of this path include setting an intention that the wellbeing we cultivate be for the benefit of all sentient beings. This sentiment is a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness and that we are not alone in our struggles, which are so often rooted and exacerbated by a sense of isolation and disregard for others. What role does a sense of interconnectedness play in your overall experience of wellbeing?
