I am writing to make you aware of the most current information on the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Our facilities and our clinicians must always be vigilant and attentive to emerging diseases that might move from continent to continent and could affect patients in our community.

As background, the illness began last month in China, As of 7 a.m. this morning, one person had been identified with the illness in Washington state, while in Southeast Asia, 26 people have died and hundreds have been sickened, mostly in China, but also in Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. In the U.S., screenings for the virus have been introduced at J.F.K. in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Chicago international airports.

While human coronaviruses are common throughout the world, information suggests that Coronavirus 2019-nCoV causes symptoms consistent with a respiratory illness such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath and, in more severe cases, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death.

We do not yet have enough of an understanding of this virus to know of a level of risk, but from our experience with precautions for SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus) in 2003-2004, we know the greatest challenge is early recognition, especially in the middle of the flu season. Therefore, we are reviewing our processes for the entry points of our facilities to identify sites where an infected patient or family member would expose other patients and staff. We are also reeducating our staff on the need for vigilance in persons who traveled or had contact with persons who travelled to China or Southeast Asia, particularly those who are ill, and immediately masking and isolating such patients should they arrival.

We are monitoring the situation with guidance provided by the NY Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). While the CDC considers this to be a serious public health concern, based on current information, the immediate health risk from the 2019-nCoV to the general American public is considered low at this time. For information visit www.cdc.gov › coronavirus › novel-coronavirus-2019.

As the nation's health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health, safety, and security threats.
