"The fire’s death toll, experts told The Washington Post, lays bare the vulnerabilities of assisted-living facilities — where “the whole gamut of protections or the ways in which someone could be safe in an emergency situation can easily fall apart,” said Richard Mollot, executive director of the national advocacy group Long Term Care Community Coalition.

The popularity of these facilities has surged in recent decades as families seek alternatives to nursing homes, which have gained a bad reputation “as being a place that is very institutional and where people tend to get poor care,” Mollot said. But the growth of assisted-living facilities has brought heightened risks. Residents are often older when they arrive or have mobility and cognitive impairments that make evacuating far more difficult, Mollot added."

The death toll of the fire in Fall River lays bare the vulnerabilities of assisted-living facilities, experts told The Washington Post.
