The Long Term Care Community Coalition (LTCCC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving quality of care, quality of life, and dignity for elderly and disabled people in nursing homes, assisted living and other residential settings. LTCCC focuses on systemic advocacy, researching relevant national and state policies, laws and regulations in order to identify relevant issues and develop meaningful recommendations to improve quality, efficiency and accountability. Staff in nursing homes often stay silent after witnessing abuse or neglect, fearing retaliation from supervisors, managers, or co-workers. In tomorrow’s webinar, elder mistreatment researcher Eilon Caspi, PhD, will share his insights and discuss how we can support staff, strengthen reporting systems, and better protect residents.

LTCCC has launched a Nursing Home Staffing Resource Center, a one-stop hub for data tools and practical guides that help the public and stakeholders determine whether facilities are staffing to residents’ needs.

Why it matters: Staffing drives safety, dignity, and outcomes. Though nursing homes are required – and paid – to provide sufficient staffing, too many flout this requirement to maximize profits.

Users can now easily compare each home’s Actual vs. Expected Staffing and identify gaps, which may indicate substandard care, neglect, or fraud. The new guides provide step-by-step instructions for accessing and using these data to support improvement and accountability.

Who should use this: Residents and families, resident and family councils, LTC Ombudsman Programs, attorneys, journalists, and policymakers covering long-term care.

Check it out now at NursingHome411!

Unfortunately, low medical director staffing is the norm in U.S. nursing homes. As a result, the care of residents in too many U.S. nursing homes lacks the professional oversight and input that only a trained and licensed physician can provide. Learn more in LTCCC’s October Hudson Valley Update!

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, most routine nursing home inspections have been temporarily halted, including annual surveys and non-urgent complaint reviews. The only exceptions are for “credible allegations of immediate jeopardy… or harm to an individual.”

🚨 This pause puts residents at serious risk of abuse and neglect, and will add to the already significant backlog of long-term care facility inspections once funding resumes.

🎃👻 What’s scarier than ghosts and ghouls this Halloween?
Trying to live on only $50 a month for all your personal needs. 😱

That’s the current Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) for nursing home residents in New York State — money they use for essentials like clothing, toiletries, phone calls, and even birthday cards for loved ones. It hasn’t been raised in decades.

🕯️ This Halloween, let’s shine a light on something truly frightening — and work together to change it. It’s time to raise the PNA and give residents the dignity and independence they deserve.

💀 Tell your lawmakers: $50 isn’t enough!

“The whole point of the federal nursing home law is that you don’t accept residents for whom you cannot provide safety and care.” - LTCCC executive director Richard Mollot

Under a provisionary — but longstanding — ownership transfer process, these nursing home operators were approved by the state out of the public eye.

Voting rights are a fundamental right for residents in long-term care. According to federal rules for nursing homes, facilities must protect residents’ rights as U.S. citizens and must support residents in the exercise of their rights.
