🧠Feldenkrais Method: Emerging Physiological and Psychological Effects in Healthy Adults

Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® sessions heavily influenced many of the Functional Movement Patterns (FMPs) taught in our Complete Body Integration (CBI) course.

This recent pilot study explored the effects of a brief Feldenkrais Method protocol on physiological and psychological outcomes in sedentary but otherwise healthy adult women.

📌 What was studied?
Participants attended eight consecutive 90-minute Awareness Through Movement® sessions, a core Feldenkrais approach that uses gentle, guided movement to enhance somatic awareness and movement coordination.

🔍 Key Findings:
• Body fluid changes: Total body water and extracellular water levels decreased significantly after the intervention, suggesting potential effects on fluid distribution and balance.
• Autonomic and stress markers: Heart rate variability didn’t change significantly, but a stress-related index (HPA axis) was higher post-Feldenkrais compared with controls, indicating an acute physiological response.
• Psychological outcomes: Participants reported improvements in self-acceptance and total self-compassion after the intervention.

📉 Limitations to consider:
This was a small study with a short intervention and no random allocation, so findings are exploratory and require validation in larger, controlled studies.

🧩 Clinical Takeaway for PTs:
This research is another piece of data confirming the value of the Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® system, and why so many of those concepts that influenced Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT) have been so integral in the success of the concepts taught through IPA. This research reaffirms that intentional movement can influence somatic regulation and psychosocial well-being in healthy adults. It highlights that when thoughtfully integrated, somatic education approaches that emphasize body awareness, movement quality, and patient self-perception provide exceptional outcomes for patients.

Today!

I figured out why some people struggle getting their legs in the right zone when doing frogs on the reformer.

When people have weakness in their core, they substitute:

Some people use their quads for everything. They're dominant. They are tight as a wire. Their knees hurt and crack and pop and it hurts to touch.

Others like to pull their heels into their butt sooooooo tight to try to stabilize. But if you do that in the straps, your back will arch and your legs will drop. But many people still try.

TIP:
Aim for 45 degrees, diamond shape, heels squeezed, in line with the p***c bone out and away.
I say "not the ceiling, not the floor, but half way between, or 45 degrees."
And keep your pelvis steady.

Have fun

WOW. I just found these images on the internet

I hope its not this bad under the skin, but I do feel knots when I am working on bodies.

Don't panic. The image is made to make you retch. If you are even a little active every day, less than. 200 years old and not a mummy, you will be way more hydrated and less gristlly. But it makes a point 👉

Stay healthy!

A lot of landings and spinning with knees bent
For good reason, because we are stable and strong when our knees are bent. Our hamstrings are ON. Don't overstretch your hamstrings. Quads and hip flexor (front of body) are responsible for so much more pain. And muscles are very prone to strain when being overpulled rather than over contracted.

Here's a quick explanation of what I mean when I say Postural Restoration

02/24/2026

Your hips are meant to SWING when you walk.

Here is a foundational technique from Postural Restoration Institute that I use every day. Yes, I practice it too and it feels great to get that mobility happening.

Try it with me
