Why are so many 20‑year‑olds starting to look older than their age?
I get this question often in my dermatology practice, and it’s time to discuss what’s causing it.
Modern routines are more aggressive. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, and multi‑step systems are being started at younger ages, layered more often, and without enough recovery time.
Retinol works, but it is not neutral. It increases cell turnover, and when skin is pushed to renew constantly, it’s never fully restored. This can lead to thinner skin, dull skin, irritation, and a tired look that reads as aging.
Add over‑cleansing and too many active ingredients, and even young skin can start to look overworked.
Healthy skin is not about constant stimulation. It is about balance and recovery.
If your skin feels irritated or tight, the answer may not be another serum. It may need a break.
Save this before you change your routine. Tell me if your skin has ever needed time to reset.
