Did you know that ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries encountered in the United States? In high ankle sprains, the syndesmosis, which holds the tibia and the fibula together, is injured. The syndesmosis acts as a shock absorber between the tibia and fibula and prevents the bones from splaying. High ankle sprains occur from twisting injuries, and can be treated with the RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression and elevate), but the amount of rest tends to be longer than for the common ankle sprain- nearly twice as long.
