For this year’s Lab Coat Ceremony, students heard from keynote speaker Alec C. Kimmelman, MD, PhD, Dean of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and Chief Executive Officer of NYU Langone Health. Dr. Kimmelman is an alumnus of the Icahn School of Medicine and is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the biology of pancreatic cancers. The Lab Coat Ceremony marks the beginning of the academic research and training for the first year PhD and third year MD-PhD students.

"Leadership is not something that you wait for a title to give you," he told the students. "It’s something you practice, here and now, in how you approach your science and your colleagues.”

Krystine Ferreira’s story reminds us that real growth happens when disciplines collide — in her case, combining sociology and biomolecular science to become an epidemiologist. At Mount Sinai she’s not only developed quantitative lab skills, but also learned to listen, communicate, and elevate the health concerns of often-overlooked communities. Check out her story and see if our Master of Science in Epidemiology program is right for you: https://mshs.co/4mqzblD
