Gvantsa Pantsulaia, MSBS ’25, found herself captivated by immunology—describing immune cell communication as “watching a movie unfold.” At Mount Sinai, she published groundbreaking research on bispecific antibodies and T‑cell priming, earned the 2025 Award for Scientific Excellence, and now plans to merge her passion for immunotherapy with patient‑centered impact in medical school.

With a background in computer science, neurobiology, and roles at Amazon and NVIDIA, Karan Lingineni entered Mount Sinai’s MS in Clinical Research (MSCR) program ready to make an impact. While in the program, he gained the tools to turn that experience into action by publishing a new resilience measure for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) and contributing to addiction neuroscience research.

Exposure to PFAS—a group of synthetic chemicals found in everything from nonstick pans to waterproof clothing—has been linked to a 31% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new study led by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Using blood samples from BioMe™, a large, multiethnic biobank of NYC patients, researchers discovered that PFAS exposure may disrupt metabolic pathways—including amino acid biosynthesis and drug metabolism—interfering with the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.

“This research helps us understand how environmental chemicals like PFAS may contribute to the growing diabetes epidemic—especially in vulnerable populations,” said Damaskini Valvi, MD, PhD, MPH.
