I had the honor of speaking to Paris Saint Germain Academy today. After 2 hours on the field we spoke about the importance of fueling their workouts and recovery!
🍎 Focusing on nutrition for youth athletes is one of our areas of specialty. This is the stage in their lives where they are growing the most ever and their nutritional demand is higher now than it will ever be in life. Their bone density is being formed, every cell in growing , muscle is being built and the habits they form now will stay with them for a lifetime.

My #1 tip for all people is STOP USING PLASTIC BOTTLES. If you don’t know by now plastic bottles contain compounds that cause endocrine disruption. Which causes higher estrogen and lower testosterone levels in your body. It can also lead to lower s***m count, prostate cancer and studies have shown a negative effect on the HPA which controls your thyroid. ⁣

🔥 As soon as the water hits room temp the plastics start to leach into the bottles. You may keep them cold but they weren’t shipped or stored cold.⁣

💧 We don’t always have control over our drinking containers, sometimes we have to use plastic bottles especially athletes.⁣

💧 We are given so many plastic bottles between training and games so control it when you can and use a metal container such as a Hydroflask or Yeti. Bonus: they keep your water cold all day even in the hot sun! 🥶⁣

💧I use a Berkey water filter and refill my flasks throughout day to prevent drinking chemicals and toxins in the tap water.

Tuscany is been everything I ever imagined and more. I dream of farm to table meats, cheese and veggies, Italian wines with no chemicals and flavors that taste exactly as you image a food would taste but never have. It’s heaven on earth.

The only thing missing is a gym to balance my 10 days of eating and drinking. But I’ll survive.

The facts are in the details. I am so sick of doctors and gurus saying IF (intermittent fasting) helps muscle growth b/c it increases growth hormone.

They are missing a huge detail here! IGF-1 Is needed for muscle growth in addition to GH (growth hormone). Fasting reduces IGF-1. I did a video on this a few months back which you can see on my IG.

Stop saying IF increases GH and helps sarcopneia or muscle growth. IT DOES NOT. These are false narratives being driven by people who. Make a living pushing intermittent fasting. Are there other benefits to IF for some people in some situations? Maybe. But there’s a ton of limitations especially for athletes, active people and women.

Just because somebody’s name says MD next to it (or RD or CNS) doesn’t mean they know what they are talking about please always double check your information before you make any decisions about your style of eating or hire a professional who understands the actual science.

Drinking a gallon of water (or more) per day can seem overwhelming for most people. Luckily our fluid intake isn’t dependent upon water only!

💦 Many of our favorite fruits and veggies contain a large percentage of water. In addition to fruit and veggie, beverages such as almond milk, coffee, tea and juices contain a nice amount of water.

💦 This doesn’t give you a pass from drinking your share of water but it does mean you should choose foods that are high in water content when focusing on your hydration.

💦 Don’t forget to sprinkle some salt on your favorite fruit or veggies for much needed electrolytes!

Fellas- Around age 35-40 it’s time to start getting your hormones checked. Every practitioner has a different list of analytes that that they prefer to use but I recommend that my clients try to test the following :

Testosterone (free & total)
DHEA(S)
Progesterone
Estradiol
GH
SHBG
IGF-1
FSH
LH
Prolactin

I highly recommend a CBC, CMP. Folate, B12, lipid panel (cholesterol), Homocysteine, CrP, A1C and vitamin D test as well to see the full picture.

This along with symptomatology and lifestyle will help me find the root cause of the problem if there is something wrong.

Yes, in many cases we can fix your hormone imbalances through your diet & lifestyle. You don’t want to just take HRT without fixing the foundation first- your diet!

Holiday Nutrition Question of the Day

Q: I have parties coming up, is it better to eat all the desserts and junk in one day and then avoid them the rest of the parties or is it better to stretch the treats out over a few days?

A: It's better not to eat junk at all, but honestly it is an average of your calories at the end of the week. From my experience with human behavior, psychology & food I would say you are better off picking one day to eat treats and be on your diet the rest. The reason being is that doing "a little bit" each day can easily lead to way more then you expected or assume. 1 cookie can lead to 5 and since yesterday you had 8 cookies then today 5 is still "a little bit" BUT NOT REALLY.

Other ways to avoid over eating at office happy hours and parties is to move away from the area that has the food. Eat before you attend the event , You can also sub your alcoholic drink for a non alcoholic drink by getting a club soda with a lime or club soda and bitters and nobody will ask you why you aren't drinking. It also helps keep you hydrated. What are some tips or tricks you have used in the past to help with holiday eating?
