Dr. Jeffrey Lemler is a renowned and leading periodontist practicing in New York City. He has authored or co-authored articles in The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry and The TMJ Journal. He is presently serving as Clinical Associate Professor of Postgraduate Periodontics and Postgraduate Department of Implantology at the New York University College of Dentistry. Dr Lemler is an active member of many organizations including the ADA, the AAP and the ICOI. Dr. Lemler lectures nationally and internationally on Periodontics, Regenerative Therapy and Implant Therapy. He was named to the American Academy of Periodontology "List of Recommended Speakers" in 2005. Dr Lemler is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr Lemler maintains a practice dedicated to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at 10 East 53rd Street in New York City.

Health Alert:

There is a skin lesion that often occurs in the mouth called Lichen Planus. Dentist will biopsy these lesions and usually tell patients that they are benign only requiring steroid creams if they become erosive(painful, bleeding). There has for a long time been reported a very low incidence of the erosive form becoming Squamous cell carcinomas(cancer). Recently, I have seen several non-erosive Lichen Planus cases that have become carcinomas.

It is very easy to become complacent and ignore these lesions due to their chronic nature. Please make sure your dentist/hygienist are vigilant in examination, diagnosis and long term follow up of these lesions.

An interesting discovery as we head into the Holiday Season. The war on Soda continues and it would seem Sugar-Free sodas contribute to tooth erosion just as much as their full sugar counterparts. Research coming out of Australia from The Oral Health CRC found no significant difference between the erosive potential of sugar-free drinks and the ones containing sugar, because the chemicals in the former appear to rot your teeth.

This Holiday Season be mindful of how much soda you consume. Still water is always the best in satisfying thirst.
