Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) We conduct cutting-edge research with a primary focus on addressing the challenges of living with TBI

The Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) conducts research addressing the challenges of traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Our recent research has focused on testing the effectiveness of treatment interventions on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning of people with brain injuries. We are also involved in several activities aimed at better identifying people with “hidde

n” brain injuries – where people have disabilities due to a brain injury, but are unaware of the causal link between an injury to the brain they have experienced and current problems in daily life. We share our research results with others through outreach to the field, sharing information with people with disabilities and their families, training future researchers and taking actions to affect policy.

In a recent Neurotrauma Reports paper, BIRC researchers used LETBI study data to explore the role of Post-Mortem Family Interviews (PFIs) in brain donation research.

We hope these findings encourage more brain banks & studies to include PFIs as part of their autopsy protocols.

- PFIs provided complementary, often more complete clinical data than medical records, especially on symptom trajectories, social factors, & family history.
- PFIs also honor the lived experience of TBI survivors. Many families described them as meaningful & cathartic.

In a recent Brain Communications paper, BIRC researchers & collaborators Raj G Kumar, Enna Selmanovic, Natalie Gilmore, Lisa Spielman, Lucia M Li, Jeanne M Hoffman, Yelena G Bodien, Samuel B Snider, Holly J Freeman, Nicola L de Souza, Christine L Mac Donald, Brian L Edlow, and Kristen Dams-O’Connor used data from the LETBI Study to identify 4 distinct clinical phenotypes in chronic TBI.

The 4 phenotypes were: 1) mixed cognitive and mood/behavioral deficits 2) predominant cognitive deficits 3) predominant mood/behavioral deficits 4) few deficits across domains. Phenotypes were based on 41 clinical measures and validated through advanced clustering methods.

MRI data indicated that cognitive & mood/behavioral phenotypes were associated with reduced cortical volumes in specific brain networks compared to the phenotype with few deficits. These findings suggest promising imaging biomarkers and intervention targets for chronic TBI.

What if we cared for older adults with TBI the same way that we care for elite athletes?”
The keynote address by BIRC Director Dr. Dams-O’Connor at the National Academies workshop on “Approaches to Address Unmet Research Needs in Traumatic Brain Injury Among Older Adults” is now available online here: https://nap.nationalacademies.org/resource/29099/interactive/

The brain injury community is concerned about proposed cuts from .
has no end date, and neither should federal funding. The proposal would eliminate key programs like the TBI Model Systems, the world’s largest study of TBI outcomes, funded by NIDILRR since 1987.

We are proud to be one of the TBI Model System centers. These cuts would directly impact the future of care and research
