NYU FACES

NYU FACES FACES (Finding A Cure For Epilepsy and Seizures) Most importantly, we are committed to finding a cure.

FACES (Finding A Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures) is affiliated with NYU Langone Medical Center and The NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. FACES began when a group of parents, adult patients, and doctors came together in 1994 to advance research, clinical care, and education, and to tackle the social and behavioral problems that complicate epilepsy. FACES seeks to improve the quality of life for all people affected by epilepsy through research, education and awareness, and community-building events.

Last Tuesday, the FACES community gathered at Industry City, Brooklyn for freshFACES 2025 for another unforgettable evening. With 210+ guests in attendance, we raised over $180,000 to support research and programs at the NYU Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

We’re especially grateful to our inspiring parent speaker, Carly Ginor, and our patient speakers, Amanda Gopie and Angie Siefert, who reminded us why we gather: to celebrate resilience, share hope, and build a future free from epilepsy.

A huge thank you to Industry City for hosting us for the second year in a row, and to our amazing volunteers, vendors, sponsors, and attendees who made the evening spectacular!

Today, we observe Dravet Syndrome Awareness Day. Previously known as Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy, Dravet syndrome is a rare form of epilepsy that is most caused often by a mutation in the SCN1A gene which leads to frequent, prolonged seizures that are often resistant to treatment.

On this day, we stand with the individuals, families, caregivers, and medical professionals who face Dravet syndrome every day. Awareness fuels research, advocacy, and hope for better treatments — and ultimately, a cure.

After seven years of research, the results of a new, groundbreaking study that included several NYU Langone patients moved experts closer to one of life's biggest mysteries: How does consciousness happen?

By testing two major theories - Integrated Information Theory and Global Neuronal Workplace Theory, researchers tracked the brain activity of 256 study participants and found that consciousness comes from how information is connected and shared, mostly in the back of the brain.

Understanding consciousness helps us determine if someone who appears unresponsive is actually aware, but unable to communicate. This leaves room for innovative measures such as a consciousness meter for patients who can't speak or move which can prove to be crucial in deciding whether or not to withdraw life-sustaining treatment.
