We are kicking off National Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Week 2026 with a spotlight of Nicholas A. Blanck, MSN, CRNA, APN-Anesthesia who has been a CRNA for 16+ years. He is the President & Chief Executive Officer of UltraCare Solutions, Inc and Executive Director of Legislative Affairs for The New Jersey Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

UltraCare Solutions, Inc. is a New Jersey based, multistate healthcare organization. For over a decade, they have specialized in anesthesia service delivery and nursing staffing solutions.

What inspired you to become a CRNA?

Like most CRNAs, I became inspired to become one by working alongside one of them in the operating room. The intensity and quality of the work they do, combined with the compassion they show their patients was so impressive to me that I became convinced it was what a wanted to do with the rest of my professional nursing career.

What do you like best about your CRNA role?

What I like best about my role as a CRNA is an extremely difficult question to answer. There are just so many positive aspects of being a CRNA. We perform our services at one of the highest levels of patient care. We manage life threatening and near life threatening circumstances nearly routinely. The complexity of our performance, and the accuracy with which we perform it, is incredibly valuable.

It is tremendously satisfying and humbling to have the privilege of being able to make a difference in the lives of my patients, every day, and under those conditions. Patient care in our role, is accomplished by marrying the most current anesthesia science with the artful compassion and interpersonal skills nursing is known for.

The combination of art and science in my everyday work is certainly something that sits at the top of my list of things I like best about my role as a CRNA.

What would you recommend to other RNs who would like to become a CRNA?

Secure a few shadow experiences with a CRNA first. It takes 11-14 years of education and experience to become a CRNA and a few hundred thousand dollars in cost to complete the journey. The profession isn't for everyone. Strive to achieve mastery of critical care nursing. To be successful, your journey must be the center of your life for over a decade and the commitment takes discipline and dedication. The benefits FAR outweigh the sacrifices, but the lifestyle requires patience, endurance, and advocacy work that can be overwhelming for most CRNA hopefuls. If you are certain you want it bad enough, save up and strap in; it’s going to be the journey that will likely define the rest of your life and has to potential to change the lives of both you and your family.

As we reflect upon November, we want to acknowledge Home Care and Hospice Month. This is an important opportunity to recognize the profound impact of homecare and hospice work and to elevate the perception of home-based care for patients, families, and the broader community.

We spoke with NJCCN Board Member, Mary Pradilla, who is the executive director of Atlantic Visiting Nurse (AVN). She has dedicated nearly her entire career to the homecare field and was drawn to the specialty early on, recognizing the value of delivering the needed care where patients live their daily lives. “It’s an honor to care for a person in their own home. They let you in – both physically and emotionally – and that provides insight you simply can’t gain in an outpatient setting,” Mary noted. “You’re able to develop a trusting relationship with a patient and work with them to identify and address barriers that impact health, safety, and long-term outcomes.”

As a part of Atlantic Health, AVN is integral to patients’ continuum of care. “It allows us to support patients at every step of their journey,” Mary explained. “When providers work together across settings, we ensure smoother transitions, stronger communication, and care plans that truly reflect each patient’s needs. It’s this seamless coordination that leads to better outcomes, a better experience, and a healthier community.”

At AVN, Home Care & Hospice Month was marked by team celebrations, gifts, team member spotlights and awards. Mary shared, “November is truly a celebration of each and every home care and hospice nurse, therapist, aide and the team members that support them in delivering skilled and compassionate care right where patients need it most.”
