"After more than a decade of working at the bedside in oncology, my plan was to pursue a role in nursing research. I was extremely interested in new developments in cancer treatment at the molecular level. I wanted to study these treatments and be part of the teams developing new options; however, I needed to further my education to pursue this option. While attending the RN-BSN program at Rutgers, I was required to take a nursing informatics course. I had no idea what informatics was at the time, but by the end of the semester, I discovered that I'd found my niche! Here was a specialty where I could use my problem-solving skills, my interest in research, and attention to detail. I could also teach, be creative and support my colleagues by improving their workflows. This was the field for me!"

"My favorite part of the role is solving problems for my colleagues. Itโs similar to the reason I became a nurse to begin with. I like to make people feel better. There is nothing I love more than figuring out why the computer system isnโt doing what the clinician is expecting it to do. I present the solution to them in a way that relieves their stress and empowers them to move forward with confidence, and to never be afraid to ask questions!"

"You donโt have to have a graduate degree to enter nursing informatics, but it is helpful to understand the theory behind your actions once youโre in an informatics role. When looking for an informatics job, keep an open mind! Job titles vary greatly and are not always in the information technology or informatics departments! Many informatics nurses find themselves working in departments like quality, clinical data integrity, education or research, to name a few. You may also find opportunities at smaller organizations, using smaller electronic health records where you can be a 'jack of all trades'. Just like the nursing profession, the opportunities in nursing informatics are limitless!"
