On Equanimity in Fall
by Rebecca Northrop
(adapted from newsletter)
As I was driving to work today, falling leaves were dancing in the air and the light has made just enough of a shift that it's clear fall is upon us.
Last year, Brad and I got married in our backyard on a beautiful afternoon on the fall equinox. This year, Brad's mother passed away a few days after we turned to fall and found ourselves, once again, at the place in our orbit where day and night are equal.
Life is constantly evolving and everything from our bodies to our relationships is bound to change. But if we're quiet enough, we can go inside ourselves, beyond the chatter of the mind, and find a deep, connected sense to that which is beyond the constant movement of our mortal lives here on Earth. The practice of going to this place inside of ourselves gives us the ability to find equanimity. And the more consistently we practice, the easier it is to find this place of equanimity in times of change, whether those changes are things we are happy about or things that bring us great sadness.
I am forever grateful that I was introduced to the practices of yoga asana, pranayama, and meditation, at a young age by my own mother. They continue to hold me steady, my practices continue to deepen, and my ability to find equanimity, even in the hardest of times, grows easier.
