1. “Therapy is not for Black People
Many BIPOC individuals have been raised in cultures where resilience is prized, and therapy is seen as unnecessary or even a sign of weakness. But healing is for everyone. Therapy offers a space to process the unique stressors and generational traumas that often impact communities of color. Your story, culture, and pain deserve care too.
2. “A therapist won’t understand my background or struggles.”
It’s valid to worry about cultural disconnects. Some therapists may not get your lived experience—but many BIPOC therapists or culturally competent allies are out there and trained to understand systemic racism, code-switching, immigration trauma, colorism, and more.
3. “If I go to therapy, people will think I’m crazy or weak.”
In many communities, mental health is still stigmatized. But prioritizing your mental health doesn’t make you weak, it makes you courageous. Therapy isn’t about being “broken” it’s about reclaiming your peace, learning tools for everyday life, and breaking cycles for future generations.
