Tomorrow is National Wear Red Day! Wear red on Friday, February 6, in support of increasing women’s heart health awareness. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, causing 1 in 5 deaths each year. Only 44 percent of women recognize that heart disease is their number 1 killer. About 1 in 16 women, age 20 and older, have coronary heart disease.

Pregnancy can evoke a wide range of emotions and concerns. Excitement and joy are common feelings, but there can also be anxiety about the many life changes that are about to occur. Licking Memorial Hospital (LMH) offers the CenteringPregnancy Program to provide assistance from pregnancy through postpartum for expectant mothers. CenteringPregnancy is prenatal care that includes a traditional health checkup with additional time and attention in a group setting. Participants meet with other women with similar due dates for eight sessions and have the opportunity to share learning and experiences with others. Women are offered the opportunity to participate in the CenteringPregnancy program during their initial prenatal appointment with an LMH Perinatal Nurse Navigator (PNN). PNNs are specially trained to assist mothers throughout pregnancy with health information and to find needed resources. For more information about joining the CenteringPregnancy program, contact (220) 564-3685. To learn more, visit https://centeringhealthcare.org/what-we-do/centering-pregnancy.

Influenza (flu) and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but are caused by different viruses. You can tell the difference between a cold and the flu by the severity and speed of symptom onset. One key difference is fever, which is a common symptom of the flu but rarely occurs with a cold. The American Red Cross is experiencing a critical blood shortage as requests from hospitals exceed the available supply of blood due to the recent holiday season, intense winter weather, and severe flu season. They have issued a public appeal for blood and platelet donors. The shortage is especially serious for types O, A negative, and B negative blood. Donors of all blood types are urged to donate now and throughout the winter. You can make an appointment to give blood now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, downloading the Blood Donor App, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Licking Memorial Hospital is also hosting a blood drive this Friday, January 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room.
