August is National Immunization Awareness Month!
Vaccines can help keep you from getting or becoming seriously ill with a disease. They protect you from many diseases, like the flu, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, COVID-19, shingles, and pneumonia. People who get some of these diseases can pass them to others, so vaccines can also help protect other people.
Some people have a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from these diseases, especially older adults, children, and people with chronic illnesses. Vaccines are important to help prevent serious diseases in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), those on dialysis, and immunocompromised people, such as kidney transplant recipients.
Calling all caregivers! The Easterseals Delaware & Maryland's Eastern Shore is hosting their annual Caregiver Conference on Wednesday, August 27th!
The conference is essential for providing support, resources, and a sense of community, helping caregivers prioritize their well-being while they care for others.
This year's Caregiver Conference focuses on "Refilling Your Cup," emphasizing the importance of self-care and rejuvenation for those who give so much of themselves to support their loved ones.
This National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM), learn how an organ donor saved Joe Mansaray’s life.
Joe went from being a star on the soccer field to a patient awaiting a life-saving transplant when he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in high school. Thanks to a donor hero’s generosity, Joe received a new heart and is back to playing soccer and will graduate from college next spring with a social work degree.
“Every day, that donated heart beats inside of me, and I’m so thankful,” Joe says.
NMDAM is celebrated throughout August to increase organ donor registrations among communities of color, which make up 60 percent of the national transplant waitlist. You can help give people like Joe a second chance at life and honor Gift of Life’s 50 years of saving lives by registering as an organ donor.

Why Choose the Kidney Transplant Program at Christiana Care?
Each year, more than 1,000 patients rely on Christiana Care’s expert team of doctors and nurses for complete kidney transplant care. This includes:
Kidney transplant evaluation
You will receive an initial evaluation and comprehensive testing to assess your overall health. You will also have the opportunity to meet with several of our team members. Our team works as a committee to determine if you are a good candidate for the kidney transplant list.
Wait list care
Once you are on the wait list, we will connect with you monthly to check on any changes to your health status and any results you receive from outside tests (cardiology tests, CT scans, etc.). We encourage proactive communication.
Surgery and after-transplant care
Our team ensures you receive the best possible care throughout the entire process—even after your surgery. You will be discharged only after you have regained your strength and your health is stable; most patients stay in the hospital up to five days. We also want you to feel comfortable and confident about taking care of yourself before you go home. When you return home, we are available to provide additional information, answer your questions, and help with follow-up care.
Living kidney donation
In addition, we serve those who wish to give the gift of life through living kidney donation. Recipients with a living donor have the best outcomes, and a living donor can be anyone healthy enough to donate. If you would like to be evaluated as a potential living donor, contact us to get the process started.
Whether you are a patient or living donor, we are here to serve you. Connect with us today.
