Historical Fact: The United States military played a significant role in early research on phantom limb pain, particularly during and after the Civil War. The American Civil War (1861-1865) resulted in a large number of amputations due to battlefield injuries. Surgeons and medical professionals began to observe and document the phenomenon of phantom limb sensations and pain in a substantial number of amputees.

One key figure in this research was Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, a neurologist and army surgeon during the Civil War. Dr. Mitchell treated numerous soldiers with amputations and became interested in the study of nervous system disorders, including what he referred to as "phantom limb" phenomena.

Dr. Mitchell, along with his colleagues George R. Morehouse and William W. Keen, conducted extensive research on the experiences of amputees, documenting the sensations and pain they reported in their missing limbs. Their work, particularly Mitchell's publication "Injuries of Nerves and Their Consequences" (1872), contributed significantly to the early understanding of phantom limb pain and paved the way for future research in the field of neurology.

Our TheraV elix 2.0 device can be customized and adapted to different types of wear. Here you see the device worn over a residual limb using a knitted knee brace as a substitute for the TheraV band. The vibrating nodes (motors) are tucked into the knitted brace and the control unit is clipped to the brace to hold it in place. Other substitutes for the TheraV band can be an ace bandage, shinker, liner, or leggings. Just make sure you have a layer of fabric between your bare residual limb and the vibrating nodes.

Just hanging out in my “kingdom” (the living room) doing my graphic design homework! I’m also using and loving my Thera V device for both in the car yesterday and today for easing those pesky phantom pain zaps! If you’re an amputee this device is a MUST HAVE! Seriously, it’s helped a lot with increasing my activity levels!

I love that you can try it out and mail it back if it doesn’t work for you, but, it works for most amputees & I would think it would help you as a CRPS amputee!
