*MESSAGE FROM MATTHEW C. SMITH AND FAMILY -
OWNER OF SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATORY
Many families are blessed to have a remarkably special pet enrich and change their lives. For the Smith family, her name was Duchess, an English Bulldog born on October 30, 2015.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our beloved Duchess, has passed away peacefully. She crossed over the rainbow bridge a month ago surrounded by her family at home on June 23, 2025, leaving an immeasurable void in our personal lives and the community she so lovingly served.
Duchess was so much more than a cherished pet; she was the heart and centerpiece of our family, a constant source of love, comfort, and joy. Her gentle nature and curious spirit made her an integral part of not only the Smith Family but also our Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes family. Her ability to connect with those who were grieving, especially children, was a remarkable gift that touched countless lives.
Duchess’s legacy of compassion extends beyond her comforting presence. She was the star of a series of award-winning illustrated books we created to help children navigate the complex emotions of grief. We are especially proud that her two books addressing kindness and empathy where Duchess teaches children, “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully" and "It's OK to Be Sad.....so let's talk about it." Through her stories, Duchess provided a gentle and accessible way for young hearts to understand loss and begin to heal.
To our dear Duchess: Thank you for nearly a decade of unconditional love, for being a source of comfort in times of sorrow, and for the countless memories we will forever treasure. Your work on this earth is done, and you have left us a better place. While our hearts are broken, we find solace in knowing your Bulldog spirit will live on in the stories you’ve told and the lives you’ve touched.
Rest in peace, sweet girl. You were the best of us.
