A miracle transplant...On December 1, our Lung Transplant team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group led by Dr. Joshua Lee, Medical Director and Dr. Jesus A. Gomez-Abraham, Thoracic Surgeon and Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant program performed a rare and complex double lung transplant.
Surgeons placed a right lung on the left side and left lung on the right side-- and it worked because Julie was born with syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that impacts 1 in 30,000 people.
Her organs developed on the opposite side, inverted, i.e., her heart which is normally on the left side developed on the right side of her body, her right lung is on her left side, and her left lung is on her right side. The syndrome also caused her to experience chronic respiratory infections, and lung infections which ultimately led to her lung failure.
But a successful transplant would be a surgical challenge, because the surgeons had to tailor make sure the new lungs would fit into her unique anatomy, it required extensive pre-transplant planning, additional CT scans and MRIs, and specialized anesthesia prep.
Julie calls her team miracle workers and is very thankful to all. This April she is honoring her donor and all the organ donors during National Month.

Julie Goley describes how it feels to breathe normally for the first time in her life thanks to a double lung transplant that could only be performed by an expert team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Lung Transplant program, RWJBarnabas Health RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group .
Julie was born with Syndrome, a genetic condition where organs are positioned on the opposite side, inverted, i.e., the heart which is normally on the left side develops on the right side of the body, the right lung is on the left side, and the left lung is on the right side. The syndrome also causes chronic respiratory infections, and lung infections.
For 54 years Julie lived a relatively normal life with this condition, but a lifetime of chronic lung infections, pneumonia and hospitalizations finally took their toll. In 2023 her lung function declined rapidly, and by 2025 she was living on supplemental oxygen, and hospitalized multiple times that year with severe pneumonia.
Her physicians referred her to New Jersey’s only Lung Transplant program, right here at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. And in December of 2025 she finally received her life-saving double .
Tomorrow, find out why Julie calls her transplant doctors miracle workers.

This April, she will be watching the runners on her screen, but with the proper amount of training her doctors say Julie, who is from New England, has the greenlight to hit the streets of Boston and participate in .
Julie received a double in December and is now back to work.
Later today, watch Julie ace her lung function test and describe what it feels like to breath normally for the first time in her life.

Our Patients Say It Best at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children's Hospital of New Jersey “The ED staff was wonderful and got us in and out as soon as possible. I fainted getting off of the train on our way to the airport to go home to Texas. Got me fluids and meds and kept us informed. My husband and I both work in a hospital and were impressed with every aspect of the unexpected visit.” We’re honored to care for our community—near or far—and grateful for the words of those we’ve had the privilege to serve. Our patients inspire us every day.
