University Hospital

University Hospital As New Jersey’s public academic health center, University Hospital is committed to providing exceptional care to every patient, every time.

One of the principal teaching hospitals for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, University Hospital is the center of referral for many of the state’s most advanced medical services and specialty care programs. Our commitment to education, primary care and specialized referral services has produced the most extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services available in the state of New Jersey. University Hospital offers a wide range of specialty services including northern New Jersey’s only Level 1 Trauma Center (incorporating a trauma-intensive care unit and the NorthSTAR helicopter emergency and critical care transport system), a regional center for neonatal intensive care, the Stroke Center, the New Jersey Cardiovascular Institute (NJCI), the Cochlear Implant Program, a neurosurgical intensive care unit and a special Brain Tumor Program, the Neurological Institute of New Jersey, a federally designated spinal cord injury program, the University Center for Bloodless Surgery and Medicine, and New Jersey’s first Liver Transplant Program. The hospital has a total active medical staff of 789. With more than 19,000 admissions, and 1,700 births, University Hospital has 226,000 outpatient visits annually.

Due to the current winter storm impacting New Jersey, hazardous conditions including heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous roads are expected to continue throughout the day. For everyone’s safety, please avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.

All outpatient appointments scheduled for Monday, 2/23, have been cancelled. Staff are working to re-schedule these appointments. Stay tuned for updates regarding appointments scheduled for Tuesday, 2/24.

The safety of our patients, their loved ones, and University Hospital staff is our top priority. Due to the blizzard, we are strongly encouraging virtual visits on Monday, 2/23. In-person visiting is not recommended until it is safe to travel and when Governor Mikie Sherrill’s restriction on personal travel is lifted. Please check back for updates.

You can still stay in touch with your loved one without coming to the hospital. To set up a virtual visit, please call 973-972-6410 or 973-972-4040 or fill out the form linked here: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=DtvLwCYxAE-kLlocETexRefv9knlt6tDge0HPJkcgRJURUdVSkVKNUpYMUhCSDdBRkc3RThTR05VOSQlQCN0PWcu&route=shorturl

With a current blood shortage impacting hospitals nationwide, our University Hospital community stepped up when it mattered most.

In partnership with the New York Blood Center, we came together for our February 2026 Blood Drive. This year, our donors didn’t just give blood, they shared why they give. Their words say it best: every donation is a second chance for someone in need.

Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and made a difference. Be on the lookout for our next drive later this spring! 🩸

This morning, University Hospital’s Carole Johnson sat down with Ken Rosato on ONNJ to discuss her new role as President and CEO of University Hospital.

Carole shared her vision for building on UH’s strong foundation; expanding access to care, advancing health equity, and strengthening our longstanding commitment as a safety-net hospital serving our community when it matters most.

Today is , an opportunity for people everywhere to wear red to bring attention to heart health and the very real impact of heart disease, the leading cause of death in both men and women in the U.S.

This February, we recognize , a time to raise awareness about heart disease prevention, encourage healthy habits, and unite with those affected by cardiovascular conditions.

Together, we can protect our hearts, support each other, and build a healthier future for all ❤️‍🩹
