We’re excited to unveil our newly expanded Emergency Department, a space designed to transform emergency care in Newark and across Northern New Jersey.

This new space increases our capacity to serve over 100,000 patients each year, with private treatment rooms, a redesigned entrance and lobby, and a layout built for safety, efficiency, and a better experience for patients and families. It also strengthens collaboration among our care teams and continues our mission as a teaching hospital, training the next generation of Emergency Medicine physicians.

A new chapter has begun at University Hospital.

We have officially broken ground on the first phase of our long-awaited campus redevelopment in partnership with Rutgers Health.

The construction of our hospital's new Administrative and Clinical Facility is the first step in a sweeping, multi-year, multi-phase plan to expand and modernize our healthcare facilities ensuring our community has greater access to the high-quality care they deserve.

“This is the first essential step in expanding the hospital building and signals the launch of a modern, leading-edge facility for the people of Newark and the entire region,” said Dr. Kaitlan Baston, Interim President & CEO of University Hospital.

This milestone is only possible with the support and partnership from our state leaders, including New Jersey State Office of Innovation Governor Phil Murphy, City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin, Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, Chair/UH Board Tanya L.
